Brass Fuel Filters

I have an 87 Marinette SFB with Chrysler 318's and as I recall there is a primary fuel filter made out of brass plumbed into the fuel system. I believe they are Perko Marine Product and so far I cannot find anything on them like replacement filters.

If they are obsolete, I was thinking of replacing them with a (Mercruiser) fuel/water separator spin on type. Hopefully it can be hard piped if not I will use fuel rated hose.

I replaced the factory fuel filters with the Mercruiser spin on style. They will mount in roughly the same position as the old ones, just have to get the right threaded flare fittings and carefully bend the copper piping to fit, being careful not to kink the copper line.

Just a thought for Greg -- if you can find a set of replacement ceramic filters for the Perkos (and at last check a couple of years ago, they were available), I'd think again about replacing them. Your call, of course. But they were much more effective for me and easier to drain than the replacements I spent a lot of money installing. They just seemed to filter more water and gunk. For me - your mileage will vary, as they say - swapping systems was not effective.

(I found some replacement filters quickly on eBay though I forget which size you need for the ones commonly found on M's)

Okay I replaced them with Sierra water separators today. My perko filters are out of here! They had a replacement filter at one time;stacked sections of cardboard. New spin in filters once a year, done. My Quadra jet carbs have in line screen type filter so they can be cleaned.

Okay guys have a 27 going on 28 year old boat/motors. New performance distributors on order and now new carbs. It's just time to update cause the motors are fine but these important components need to be updated. Lots of options but I am thinking new Quadra jets or Holley.

Love my boat!
