Raw Water Pump Rebuild

Anyone have experience with a pump locking up before starting?

I went out today for my weekly start up and battery charge ritual and the pump wasn't moving and the belt was smoking hard when it started up. I obviously killed the engine when all that happened.

The only think I can think of is that before I shut down last week, I think I closed the seacock before the engine shut down (maybe 30 seconds before).

Not sure if that can cause an issue or not. The pump was professionally rebuilt about 6 months ago.

Should I just break it loose with a pipe wrench and try again??

If another rebuild is called for, should I get the major or minor kit.

I have a dual pocket pump - the expensive kit is here:

I had the same thing happen this year I would almost bet you have a piece of the impeller come apart and stuck in the outlet. I did the full kit it gives you the ceramic bearing and on mine the spring behind it would not have made it a full year. Look and see if you have a cast or welded steel pulley the cast is better and come off a lot better than the welded steel if they are stuck hard on the shaft. The steel are very easy to bend getting them off. I used heat and used bolt as jack screw and still ended up buying a new pulley and had to do some machining on it to make it line up correct..
Good luck

If you closed the sea-rooster and ran the engine for 30 seconds, you have more than likely burnt up your impeller. And possibly overheated the housing and bearings. It might only be the impeller melted and stuck to the housing. Never let an engine run more than a few seconds without some kind of liquid ( water or anti-freeze ) going through the pump. Unless you have Globe run dry impellers, which I am not sure are made for the dual pump. I have a set for my '75 318 single pocket pump, but haven't installed them yet, waiting for the ones I have in there to show signs of wear before I do. I have seen the Globe impeller in a 305 chev that were in the pump used 40-50 hours a year for over 10 years that showed very little signs of wear and still pumped great.

Grrrr - lol

My pulley wobbles and makes the belt loose after a short time. I'll look for a complete unit in addition to the rebuild kit. The one I'm finding is like $250 - seems a bit crazy for such simple and common parts

Yep that's about right. If you have a damaged shaft it will be a little more. you will either have a 5/8 or 3/4 shaft. If your pulley has play in it and will not stay tight I'm thinking you have the after market welded one not the cast pulley. If they did not machine the center hub you should look and see if the pulley is in line with your system. My new pulley was not and I had to work on it.

I'll pull it off and see whats up. Yes, the damn thing wobbles and loosens the belt after about 2 weeks. I go through about 2 belts a year
