Anyone have a line on the whereabouts of a proper 2.5 inch 140 degree thermostat ? They seem to be made of that elusive material "unobtainium ".

If your boat has Chrysler engine(s)...

Dave Kain at Hurrikain Marine Products http://www.hurrikain.com/

I just ordered a thermostat from them earlier this spring. Shipped very quickly. They have lots of other Chrysler parts too.

I get mine from NAPA. The issue becomes the gasket. I bought gasket material and made my own. Not a perfect solution and I plan on getting the correct gasket soon.

I found the gasket at Autozone for about $2 and change. They had a 70 mm t'stat for roughly $12 but it was a 160.

Correct me if I'm wrong, i thought it was a standard automotive style but had a 1/8" bypass hole drilled in it.

so if you look at the manual for a 67 318 here is what the photo says the thermostat is. The one on top that we would all call the thermostat is called a pressure relief . So my boat is a 73 and only has the odd looking 100 plus dollar thermo but if you seen the post fastjeff made an aluminum plate and a trip to your local parts house and you will be well under 20 bucks. I called Marysville Marine and they confirmed they can no longer get the odd screw in type. ( also found a company making this style but for aircraft and about 350 bucks.) If anyone has any input I would love to here it because we are at the stage of putting the old stuff back in and running it till it breaks.

I have a 72 318 in my 28' express and also had the "top hat" thermostat at $ 100.00. Followed fastjeffs advise and made my own.
Found a 140 degree thermostat at NAPA in their marine catalog for about $ 24.00. It was a Mercruiser thermostat but didn't matter as, following Jeffs instructions, I made the mount myself. When I bought the boat it was only running at 100 degrees and found that the thermostat had been removed. Runs much better when hot.
Good luck

P.s.
The picture you show looks nothing like the thermostat housing on my motor and I wouldn't think yours would differ from mine..

The photo is of the 67 318 setup . Mine is a 73 28ft single 318 and is the same as yours.
