Packing box "wobbling" at low RPMs

From 600-1500 rpm the packing box is vibrating/wobbling around - lock nut remains tight though.

When I reach 2000+ rpm the packing box remains completely still.

It's leaking a little more than it should but nothing crazy.

Any ideas? I just want to make sure it's not going to work itself loose and start a big ol' leak.

Did you hit sometthing :?:

You need to get this corrected very soon or severe transmission damage could result.

I would start by separating the coupling and see where the shaft rests. If it falls out of alignment then you need to investigate further.

Bill covered some of the possibilities.

1. Bent shaft?
2. Prop out of true
3.Worn Cutless Bearing (prop, engine, shaft problems etc; can cause this)
4 .Transmission bearing wear causing wobble
5. Engine/coupler alignment do to an engine shift. (not too likely but possible.
6. Bent strut. (ours are really tough when they get hit usually brakes or goes wildly wrong immediately!)

Or all of the above ! KEEP US POSTED.

safe boating,
dave

I would think that your shaft is bent. At 2000 RPM it's just too fast of movement to see, Put your finger on it, you will feel it is still moving.
All are correct, fix soon & let us know.

I have the same issue on my port shaft. Mine is on a remote mounted V-drive. I am going to get it worked out when I pull the boat for winter. I believe one of the POs hit something as both rudders are pretty bent and I believe my prop shaft is bent as well. Luckily the boat came with a spare prop shaft.

Other info to consider:

My cutless bearing is new for this season.

I am also running a brand new propeller shaft this season.

I have a Globe Drivesaver installed. Packing box wobbled before and after drivesaver was installed.

I did hit something last week but again, the wobble was there BEFORE this incident as well as after. We were in shallow water at idle speed about 500rpm. (I immediately threw it into neutral and we paddled out of the area) After hitting this mystery object we ran the boat at several different speeds and no additional vibration seemed to be present.

That's why I don't like those Drivesavers. They have no way to control side forces on the coupling.

UPDATE:

Pulled the boat and saw right away that the prop was slightly bent due to hitting a stump at low speed.

Had the shop check the shaft for runout and the they found it to be perfect.

They also adjusted the placement of the shaft anode and checked the torque on all the drive saver bolts.

So, I have to send the prop off to get fixed up and we'll see what that does.

What was your result?

Getting the prop fixed up helped this issue, but a slight wobble at the packing box is still present.

I had two different mechanics watch the packing box while in gear - neither seemed to think it was that big of a deal.

May be taking it to someone for a third opinion this season...will update.
