Anyone ever removed the wood trim around the dinette table and counter without breaking it? I'd like to redo the table and counter with new formica. Any secrets out there on how to do this.

Thanks

I took my table in to a cabinet shop. They did a very good job of putting a piece right on top, without removing the trim.

For the counter, I cut a new piece of plywood, and they laminated that.

For the rest of the smaller tops, I gave them the measurements, and they cut me individual pieces. A little trimming and I was done.

I agree with John and am in the process of doing the same on my 28'. Pulled the vanity out of the head and the countertop out of the galley. You could spend hours removing the old laminate, but the two easier tricks are (a) gluing new laminate on top or (b) replacing the whole top. We recently had the countertops re-done at home and the contractor did the latter: I asked and he advised that the higher material cost was outweighed by labor savings. I'll probably just bring the vanity top and countertop to his shop.

For the cabinet tops, I figure on buying slightly oversized laminate pieces and trimming them with a router or my roto-tool. (Or just replace the wood trim.) The PO already replaced the dinette table with a piece of mahogany plywood--he told me someone was scrapping an old Lyman and gave him a pile of plywood. I've finished enough tables to know that several coats of varnish (or my favorite, Gym Finish) will more than protect the wood.

Good luck.

Removed the table and the wooden strips from mine, made a much larger table, then attached to the port cabin wall so it doesn't flop all over the place like before. One of the best mods I made on the boat.
