We have a 1988 32 flybridge. The Bennett trim tab pump finally gave out. I spoke with Bennett and they have a trade in program for th pump for $188. I was down in the back getting ready to pull the pump when my neighbor asked what I was doing. He is a fishing charter captain. He said he went through 2 pumps over the years and also saw some performance issues.

He searched and found electric actuators that replace the bennett pistons and uses the same mounting holes as well as the electric wire passes through the hull where the hydraulic tubing was. He said solid performance and quicker response. I can get the upgrade or changeout kit for $250.

I am thinking this is the way to go. Easier to maintain in the future.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts?

If you took sharp photo of pump and posted, folks here could probably tell you brand. That's what I think you mean when you say you don't know what "kind" you have. My bet is that you have Bennett which has long been quite popular. But I know what you are asking, that is an opinion from someone who has had both types about their durability, operation, and ease of repair.

One con I can see with hydraulic type is that they can develop leaks which requires hose changes. I've never had that problem to my knowledge and they just keep chugging on.

I have had both types.. on different vessels. My own experience.. Bennett hands down. Seldom if ever needs repair... unit on my M is 23 years and going strong. Super support and great folks to deal with!
