first order of business is to check for name of mfr, after you find that replacement should be easy...well, sorta

Large truck stop stores carry replacement covers but the only ones I have found are white translucent and don't match my originals.
I only needed to replace one in the galley so I moved the good one from the wine cellar under the steps and used the new one there where it is inconspicuous.

Absolutely no manufacturer's name on 12 v cabin lights. Checked PERKO and they have lot of lights, but noting to match these oldies. Guess i will keep on looking. Maybe I will replace them all [about 8 of them] .

If they are merely cracked you may be able to repair with the stuff sold at auto parts stores to repair the plastic headlight/stoplight lenses. Which reminds me. . . . .

I have the same problem. Need 4 new lenses but in my case, they are heat distorted. A quick search reveals no replacement lenses available anywhere. Would like to avoid buying completley new units.

It is not necessary to replace the whole fixture - I bought pretty bright led "bulbs" on ebay that are designed for automotive backup lamps, and just plugged them in.

I like having the original dome and plastic can/bullet lights to maintain the historical aura of my Mtarinette. However, I've been thinking about re-lighting the entire boat with LED units. Plans would be to also add "tastfull" courtesy lights to brighten the galley, vee-birth and cockpit. Having a well-lighted engine room wouldn't be bad either. My reluctance in undertaking the job is the high cost involved and the loss of the art deco feel that once gone is never regained. Maybe I'll leave the OE lights and poor lighting quality and just add the LEDs where they can't be seen... but then there's the $.

I should have been a more careful poster and I would have seen Doug's great suggestion. I'm off to find those LED backup lights.

I have had good luck with ebay Item number: 180378401412: 2 White 27 SMD LED Reverse Tail Light Bulbs 1156 7506

At $20 a pop, they are not cheap compared to the $0.50 or so for an 1156 tungsten bulb, but I think that the reduced battery drain, reduced heat in the lamp, and long life (I hope) should make up for the initial cost. I showed a calculation in this forum once that gave the actual cost of storing energy in a battery, and the LED looks a lot better when you compare total cost for battery and bulb.

I am happy to report the domes on my ceiling lights match those now manufactured by Peterson Lights. The part number is 380-25C. They are identical to what is on my 86. www.pmlights.com.They did not want to sell to me direct but suggested I try my local O'Reilly auto parts store. They ordered one for me @$3.86 plus $5 handling and when it turned out to be perfect, I ordered more. 5$ covers however many you want to order.

sittin duck-

Do you have any part numbers, or photos of your lenses?

Also - my lights have the old style toggle switch. Can I assume yours did too?

Maybe we can set up a group buy, if there is enough interest...

Thanks!

Hey Doug, How are those LED lights for light output compared to the original 1156 style bulbs. Are they as bright? Are they EXTREMELY white/almost blue? I have thought about trying them myself but havent done it yet. Any one else who has them also... What do you think? Let me know when you get a chance please.

Thanks
Bill

Long AGO (OK, ABOUT 5 YRS AGO) I put an led bulb in the cabin fixture, subbing for an 1156. Light out: much less. Color: blue-white. It depends on the number of led bulbs in the unit and I can't recall that number (probably 18). I decided to hold off on installing more to wait for technology to catch up.

One great advantage is its use as a night light while on the hook. More than adequate with a very low power drain. But for reading a book, you'd need to hit the book with two lights to read comfortably. Of course, you'd still be ahead on power usage.

My other LED is the anchor light. From Stecktronics, I love it because of a)power b)adequate brightness all around c) by flicking the on-off switch multiple times it can slow flash, fast flash, SOS, auto on at dusk. Cool. Not cheap when I bought it 5 yrs ago (about $105). I swapped it for the existing Perko light.

Back when LED bulbs were made up of several little lamps pointing in different directions, they weren't so good - it took 50 or more to make a decent bulb.

Now there is Surface Mount Technology, wherein the little flat dice are put on circuit boards. They are much brighter and the ones I mentioned make a good replacement for the tungsten bulb.

Automotive bulbs are blueish, but you can get "warm" bulbs as well. I cannot read with the overhead light no matter what bulb is in them, so I installed little swiveling directional lights that came with 10 w halogen bulbs. I have replaced these with 2 Watt MR-11 base LED bulbs, and they are very good to read by. These bulbs can be purchased in cold white or warm white, the latter has a color temperature of 3000K or so and are pretty pleasant. I don't mind the cold white, I find it good to read by.

I have an AquaSignal series 20 anchor light, and it takes a BA9s base, the small (9mm diameter) bayonet mount with a single contact. I found a nice SMD LED replacement so I am good on the anchor light for about 10 bux.

LEDs have come a long way. I am starting to use them in the 120 VAC circuits as well. I have not yet seen one fail, and perhaps I can someday get away with few or no spares....

Has any one replaced their old dome lenses lately? Is this Peterson Lights part number 380-25C still good for M dome lights? The reason I am asking I would like verify to the number I need instead of ordering one to test then ordering the rest. I am fixing the old girl up a little this winter.

I have found a source for replacement lens for the ceiling dome lights on my 81 M. I called Fox Tail Lights (877-476-5444) and they were so helpful with fast service. The Replacement Lens are Peterson 380-25C and they fit and look great.

My local O'Reilly auto parts store said that Peterson is not a vender any longer.
