I would like to install a small automatic bilge pump below my forward main pump and use the same through hull for both. I would guess it is possible but need suggestions for keeping "backflow" from one pump from emptying back into the hull through the second pump. The small pump would more adequately remove small amounts of water that the big pump can't reach and place the more expensive main pump out of any small amount of standing water. I'm thinking some of you guys have a similar set-up.

I discharge the shower sump, which has its own little thru-hull, through the same thru-hull as the forward bilge pump.

The hose from the forward bilge pump rises straight up as high as possible, and then slopes down at an angle to the thru-hull. This minimizes the amount of "flow-back" when the pump turns off, keeps the hose empty, and should make it a little harder for water to come in from the thru-hull.

Just at the thru-hull, there is a "T" and the smaller hose from the shower sump is connected. This hose rises straight up from the shower sump, and then angles down to the thru-hull. Just to be on the safe side, I have a one-way valve just above the shower sump pump to keep the bilge pump output from coming back into the shower sump.

It all seems to work OK.

I'm assuming that I can connect the small bilge pump to the main bilge pump discharge line, close to the thru-hull (and on the "downhill" side of the main discharge line) with a "T" and be ok. I'm also thinking that the small discharge line will need a one-way to complete the installation. Your mention of the shower sump gave me an idea. Why wouldn't I just run the small discharge line to the shower sump basin and let the shower sump pump remove the small amount of excess bilge water?

Actually, a "Y" fitting works better than a "T". I put the "Y" right at the thru-hull, then ran the two separate hoses to it.

I put the one-way valve into the shower pump output to prevent "oscillating", in which the pump turns off, and enough water comes back from the hose to start the pump up again. This entertained the heck out of the kid, but otherwise is not too desirable.

I only turn on the shower sump pump when someone is going to take a shower, but it could be left on all the time, and would be a good place to collect runoff from the dehumidifier and the like, as well as for your little bilge pump.

Thanks, Doug. I've been out for a few days and haven't been able to check responses.
