Thought our BigM people would like to read a true survival story with a great ending from a guy in Holland, Michigan....

Thats a scary thought. sounds like he went through a gammit of emotions. God's grace and a will to survive enabled him to write this story.Pray

My brother had a similar experience, but he wasn't as lucky. A professional lobster fisherman, he was pulling pots (traps) all alone in the winter when he fell overboard. Not having a life jacket on, the dumb sh*t, he cut the floats off two pots and stuck them under his arms while watching his boat disappear in the distance.

The boat, on autopilot, grounded on beach, and here my brother got lucky: a friend spotted it, figured out what had happened, and called the Coast Guard. They spotted him with a chopper, hauled him in and airlifted him to Woods Hole (which has a care unit dedicated to hypothermia victims). He recovered fully, even though his body temperature was a record 82 degrees!

He remembers nothing of being rescued, or the trip to the hospital, and he gave up lobstering the same day (urged on by his wife!)

SOme years ago met a guy ast the dock who was tying up and muttering that he was lucky to be alive. In brief, he fell overboard while the boat was in gear. Managed to grab the stern somehow (perhaps, the swim platform) and had to step on top of the outdrive to haul himself up. He, too, was lucky to escape the props. He was breathing hard as he told us the story and my wife immediately forbad me to go out alone. The thought of chopped boater is grisly.

Fast fwd to really dumb thing I did last week when we got caught in a brief but nasty Chesapeake Bay t'storm. I was keeping the boat steady into the wind and pretty well under control. But when the cabin windows fogged over and the visibility went to almost nothing at the same time, I realized that the best course was to toss out the anchor (12' of water). I did it but forgot to put on a life jacket. Next time there is a storm or even one close by, the jacket goes on. !!
