To All,

Here’s a little trick I stumbled across while cutting out my extension for my swim platform with a saber saw, if U don’t have the use of a plasma cutting torch. It took the better part of the morning & most of the after noon to cut the first arc of the extension, changed blade tooth sizes on the saber saw just about gave up near the end of the cut I ran into the wooden bracing the saw started cutting smoothly less force was needed then (the idea light lit up) I put a scrap piece of old 1/8" luaun 2' x 8' under the AL. plate the other side of the cut was cut in less than 2 hr the same held true for the cutting of the pressure relief holes in the plate which took a little longer due to the numerous straight edge setups to cut the holes uniformly. Don’t know the exact reasoning behind the wood backing makes if it’s because there’s less vibration or the wood cleans the blade but AnyWho it worked great try & see the difference if U have a scrap piece AL. at home make a cut with a 16T tooth blade (which seemed to work best) without backing than make a cut with a backing U will notice the big difference believe me. Here a few pix of the thing.

This is the first cut I bet I measured the damn thing ten times so not to screw up $529 plate, use the platform as a straight edge

the rest of the holes still need a little dressing
http://s25.photobucket.c...&current=Pic007.jpg

here’s the view of the wood backing a much easier way to cut

http://s25.photobucket.c...&current=Pic001.jpg

This view is self explanatory success

so is this one

A finally my JUST reward Drool

Is this a duplicate of the original design, or is it larger? The Admiral complained that M didn't make the swim platform large enough.

Jeff,

The whole thing when done will stick out 36" from the transom plus the whole width of the stern it’ll be welded to the original one with bracing, ribbing, & outer edging like the old one using 1/4" x 2" for all the above . Also plan on cutting a notch 10 to 12" deep out of the old platform to accommodate a outboard kicker motor for trolling & the no wake zones hopefully this will relieve some of the weight on the platform by moving it closer to the transom & not give a problem in planing yet still give me plenty of platform if $$$ permits plan on building a aluminum removable davit so on long treks I’ll be able to remove motor & mount the DUX back there. Davit may have to wait till next year. I thought that U extended your swim platform a while back? Think Just had a set back welder called that he can’t get to it till at least Wed. Or Thur. d'oh!

Try turning the skill saw blade around backwards, sounds crazy, but thats what we did when we added the second story to my cat. Cuts smoother. Cut sheet steel this way too. see at www.sorrydog.com

(my motto almost outta beer the fishing trips over) Speak to the hand So if it’s to your choosing comon up we’ll weld her up & party for days. Applause U mean turn the saw blade around in a saber saw also I’ve known about A$$ backwards blade in a circular saw & table saws but wasn’t aware it could be done with a saber saw. Think
So I guess I’ll be seeing U in about 2/3 days oh by the way bring up a couple of them Cuty’s that are on your web site tell them to be wrapped in their furs cause it’s cold as hell up here. Applause Applause Drool Anxious

Hey Ya All,

I finally have the F/B at home setting on the back of the pick up Applause Will be taking it to the powder coat guys by weeks end probably 2/3 weeks till finished. Hopefully it turns out as good as the pulpit did. I just love a maintenance free boat, paint is fine but one must polish it semi annually with powder coating only if U are stuck in port & run outta other thing to attend to which is unlikely on a Whistle UKWIM Boo hoo! Swim platform will more than likely be welded up within a week, things are falling into place rather nicely may be able to truck the OTM over to the other side of the State by 1st of April if weather permits. Look out Lake Mich. Salmon I’m comen to get you’re A$$es. Fred save a few days vacation time for August when the 30lb er’s start their run we can nail those babies to the hull Applause

Norm: while the fb is off you may want to either cut another cable route between topside and cabin or toss in a couple of messenger wires for good luck in case of future expansion. Getting new lines into the crowded duct is a bear and a half. Another winter project for you

Joel,

Thanks for the Heads Up on running the extra wires up Applause But I’m one step ahead of U on that one when I put a new antenna on I pulled 4 extras up there I used 250lb. test down rigger (.30dia.) wires up I know it’s a little overkill I have 100s of yards of used stuff laying around seeing I change them about every season or so or if they start to look frayed, I got a underwater camera that’s to expensive loose for $20 bucks worth of new cable Anxious It’s a blast watching when the fish are about to strike plus I have the advantage of knowing which ones to say Fish On & let some one else catch the little ones some how I manage to catch the biggest fish of the day. See I’m not only El cheap-o like Jeff, I’m also El slick- o. Shhh

Yes sireee, we are taking the aft hand rail, hatch cover, and stern coaming trim cap to the 'coater' when we get the paint stripped off. All will be 'ryder wagon red'.

Ain't that cute. Hey, if it cuts the labor costs, it's worth it.

I'm sure your guy knows what he's doing but you might ask about the metal preparation and coating. I've heard stories of it being sandblasted at the end of the day on Friday and coated on Monday morning. Guess what?

Forgot to mention this....From my old days of porting aluminum heads on race car motors, I learned that dipping a carbide bit in kerosene keeps it clean. Otherwise the bit will clog with smeared aluminum.
