To All,

I’m looking for a Lower helm mounting plate that the gages are mounted on need not be in good shape just need it for a pattern to make a new one. Don’t want to take mine off with all the wires that have to be disconnected I’d rather have the new one made up & do one gage at a time so I can get the wiring right.Brick wall I’ve made one by measuring but it doesn’t meet my satisfaction some of the gage holes R off & it ERK’s me when something isn’t just right d'oh! Here’s some pix of what I’m trying to accomplish.

The first pic is the part I’m looking for

The second pic is the I made if U zoom in U can see on the port side that the fuel & voltage gages & on the strB side the temp gage R way off dang them rubber rulers d'oh!

The third one is of the upper panel & not too happy about that one even though it’s some what close but close only counts in horse shoes & atom bombs

Looks great indeed! That's some mighty nice grain!

I avoided the registration problem by mounting the gauges through the wood, and eliminating the metal panel completely. The key switch fits a thick panel, as do my stop switches and the control for the tabs. I made sure that all the grounds to the meters were wired (they should be anyway) and it all seems to work. I used a fine-grain mahogany so the grain doesn't really show in the photo but it looks ok in person. Just another way of doing it:

Norm,

Looks like the panels may be different from year to year or, maybe even different with each size boat. The layout on Dougs appears very different from yours. Good luck.

The layout on mine is different -- I laid it out directly on the wood to be similar to the way the original metal panel was. But I wanted to leave extra room at the right for the exhaust temperature gauge that I will install some day. Beside the keyswitches are guarded stop buttons - not needed for gas engines because they just naturallly stop when the ignition is turned off.

What I wanted to show was that the gauges mount through the wood nicely if you use a hole saw (2 1/8 I think for the small ones, 3 1/2 or so for the large). I bought cheap hole saws for the job. The wood is one piece of mahogany about 1/2" thick, and at each end I screwed aluminum angle to the back to prevent curling of the wood. The angle pieces fit closely from top to bottom of the hole in the dash, so they also serve to locate the panel properly.

I don't remember what happened to the old metal panel. It was in really rough shape, so I likely threw it out. Sorry.

Max,

Yup it looks a lot better Applause You have a point there mines a 89 32' F/B sedan. When I seen Doug’s
I just assumed that when he converted to diesels he also had to reconfigure the instrument panel
So to clarify the panel issue to anyone on the site with a 32' sedan or F/B sedan twin/ gas could U
confirm if all 32' sedans say from the mid 70s To late 80s have the same configured panel or do they differ from year to year etc. TIA

Doug,

Again a very Professional job Applause
The reason I tried to go with the over lay type helm panel was to avoid taking all those wires to the gages off & causing a problem with cross wiring when reassembled.Brick wall I my have to find a measuring devise that isn’t made of rubber d'oh!

You could take each gauge and switch off one at a time and reconnect the wires back. Use the old pannel and reconnect the gauges.

Norm,

I guess it's hard to tell, but it looks to me as though your wood is correct and the panel beneath it is not symmetrical.

At any rate, it is a shame to not get the look you want just because of wiring. So here's the deal: If you want to make a new panel, just do so, mount the gauges in it, and send it to me here in Virginia and I will wire it for you. I will send it back and you can install it. You will need to hook up just one wire per gauge (the "S" connection, usually) and the ignition switch, and all should be well. I will put terminal blocks on the panel, so that all your wiring connections will be in one place. You will need to mark each wire as you remove it from the old gauge, so that you will know what it is for. I would just write it on a piece of masking tape and wrap it on the wire.

If all goes well, you will have a new panel for next season, and I will have a little something to keep me occupied here, while I am 1500 miles from my boat.

Not quite, Norm.

Each gauge needs ignition, ground, and the signal "S" from its sensor. In addition, the ignition switch needs battery and start. If you have ammeters, they will need "charge" from the alternator.

But most of the wiring is on the panel, the only thing each gauge needs that it can't get close by is the sensor wire.

After a lifetime of doing it, I wire so fast that a little panel like yours is no big deal. You will have to locate and hook up the wires that leave the panel, but they are color coded and it should not be a problem. I will run them all to a terminal block and give you directions.

If it all works out, you can give me a ride next time I am in Michigan. Wait, I've never been there....

Doug,

I was wondering if I could accomplish the same thing by using the do-fadgy-macallits in the pic below ? That way as I disconnected the gages etc I could splice the d-f-m to the wires & gages as I took them of each gage off etc than all I’d have to do is mark the d-f-m to the gage I took out & when I make the new panel all I’d have to do is plug them in. The plug in the pic was just one I had laying around the ones I’d use would be male/female of course & a heavier gage wire. If any of this makes any sense Think

Norm,

A connector like you show is alright, but you might consider using a terminal block with screws. It is more reliable and easier to work on - those Molex connectors need special tools, not just a screwdriver. I would go with the connector if it is already on the harness, otherwise I would use terminal blocks, one for each engine.

You will need at least eight connections per engine: Ground, battery, ignition, start, alternator, tach, fuel, and temperature. The voltmeter connects to battery so it doesn't need its own wire. It is nice to have spares, I would use a terminal block with 12, each engine.

I can mount the terminal blocks to the back of the panel, wire to them, and give you the eye terminals needed for the wires that you will hook to them. They are easy to put on, the connectors not so easy.

As you take wires off, mark them with masking tape. It is a zoo trying to figure out which is which. If they are properly marked, then putting them back is no big deal.

I wish I had a picture of the back of my panel to show you, but when I am doing stuff I forget to document it. Next trip to the boat, will do.
