From the description, it looks like a really inexpensive plotter approach. It'll track where you are and post the info on a chart. The rest of the functions for which you call upon a GPS - waypoints and routes, for example - are not included. Although, the info indicates you can draw course lines. As a backup system, it's not bad. The other part of your investment is a laptop and it appears a cheap laptop could accomodate this quite easily. Nice find

The main question is what will Sea Clear II do...
The charts seem to be standard NOAA issue obtainable anywhere. The USB GPS and the Sea Clear software are paired together and the question is how well do these two components work together. How capable is the GPS reciever and what will the software allow you to do.

Will be interested in hearing about your expirence with them.

I bought a usb gps sensor for about $30, and have a free copy of the chart program that runs on linux (I don't have windows). The charts themselves are a free download from the NOAA website - should be, we've already paid for them in our taxes.

I got my "DIGINAV" + Seaclear software today, seems to work ok. Found my house. The little GPS antenna even worked inside! My house is 40 00 47.50N, 89 49 57.43 W Imput is not compatable with "Google Earth"

According to the instructions(yes, I did watch them) it will automatically change to the next chart. W'll see when we get on the boat.

Damn straight! I've peered intently into the dinky little screen of my Garmin 76 many a time and couldn't see for beans--especially when the sea was rough.

That is a MAJOR consideration for selecting a GPS.

I've run sea clear II. It's free and nice for what it is. It's only as accurate as your GPS is set for ...
Why pay 75 bucks for maps you can get free??? You can download maps from the NOAA site in RNC format (or make your own from jpgs) that are calibrated.

Sunlight readable monitors are coming down in price.

GPS & chartploters
Im still playing around with my stuff , trying to put together as much free as i can.
I looked at DIGI NAV but not compatible with google earth as we know. If im correct its no longer supported, no updates. Did find NAVIGATOR 1.0.1 and believe it's a stand alone and will work with G. E. Will work with WIN , XP , and VISTA . Believe updates are
available, still snooping. Like Marinettejoe put in his post, no need to spend money when you can download for FREE.

Google Earth based maps aren't recommended by me for navigation. They are not all that accurate for WGS-84.

Not sure what this geogarage is, but if I text my boat to get its position and look there, I am right at the boat. The photo is fairly recent, since it shows my dinghy on the foredeck where it has been for less than a year.

On the right side, click on map content, change to physical and NOAA. You should see the NOAA Charts for your area.
