How to delaminate West System Epoxy

Here’s a little tip I stumbled upon while trying to remove West System Epoxy from my down rigger mounting board first I tried sanding it just gummed up the # 80 & # 60 paper than I applied coatings of varnish removers to time consuming & costly an didn’t work well. Sat back had a couple Brewski’s when the ole (idea lite bulb came on Whistle )In my younger days I use to work as a exterior house painter & on a lot of the brickerbrack where the paint would semi blister & peel I’d burn the area with a torch than wire brush & sand to get back to the wood so I thought why not use the same technique to singe the W S E off the board with modern day tool technology & the inception of the heat gun I began first turning the heat up to 350* it started to bubble the epoxy with the assist of a wood chisel (use a cheap one, putty knives to limber)
I started to scraping off the bubbled epoxy but it would soon harden than by turning the heat up gradually to 600* ( this heat setting worked the best for me ) & applying to the 2 ½” blade an as the epoxy started to bubble I’d push the blade forward peeling the W S E off like tape had a couple scorch marks on wood but sanded off easily I did a 2"x6" x 12' board in under 2 hours now to do the edges & sand for a couple three coats of W S E that I hope will last as long as the first application did 7 yrs Pray of being in the elements, cannon balls banging on it fish guts blood water beer etc getting baked on & scrubbed off but the worst enemy being the UV rays this time I’ll use the UV protector made by W S E to add to the longevity of the appearance. AnyWho That’s my ½ penny’s worth Boo hoo!
Ohh by the way don’t touch the chisel blade to get peeled epoxy off use your eleventh finger a piece of wood d'oh!

Hi Norm,

The use of heat is mentioned in one of the West System technical manuals.

Fred,
Thanks for the update I’ll go to their site to see if they have a better method always something to learn. Even though I’m a ole dog (notice I used a small “d ” in dog so as not to infringe on SorryDog’s handle) Whistle
