Been having a problem with both trim tabs for a while. They would extend fine but wouldn't retract correctly. Could get them to retract by pushing the rocker switch to supply short bursts of power. Had to repeat many times to accomplish full retraction. Sometimes they would retract after holding the switch down for a LONG time (>1min) and then you would hear a stammering noise as they retract, stop, retract, stop.....Motor ran fine and the solenoids were pulling in.

All voltages were good to HPU and the ground wire is bonded well. Measured all four wires on pump side of connector. Nominal 12.5v when activated. After reading all the Bennett documentation on troubleshooting and talking to the tekkie, it was sent out for an overhaul.

What U described sounds like a classic case of air in the Hydr. lines Think

They extend fine so air in the lines was ruled out.

Don't forget that we can read 12.? volts with a meter at times but have a bad connection that will not let enough current to flow to do the work we want. Not much current flow with the volt and a half battery in the meter circuit. Find this a lot of times on tail/brake light sockets....

The connection plug at the pump was checked for voltage drop across each pin: zero volts with pump running. Thanks.

The Bennett folks are really nice and will take care of the problem, whatever it is.

Bennett didn't do JACK for me! Here's what they said...

We found the unit to be a fairly old unit; most likely early 1990's model, which has lost quite a bit of PSI over the years. The unit tested out at 260 PSI, which a standard pressure is 350 PSI. This low PSI pressure might cause some issues with deflecting your trim tabs down. Basically, it is time to see about replacing the unit with a new one, which the part number for it would be "V351HPU1" and it retails for $362.00 from any of your local marine dealers, catalog &/or Internet retailers.

The old unit would extend fine! And there was no mention of what might have been causing my original "not retracting" problem. (A detailed description of the problem accompanied the returned HPU.)

So I say:
Thanks for the update. So that's it? I was hoping you could suggest another option. Like, perhaps rebuilding or refurbishing my unit? Isn't that possible?

MJ says:
The unit is not in any condition that would allow us to rebuild or refurbish the unit, because of the age and the condition of the aluminum pump assembly. But, we do understand your situation, so we would like to offer you a brand new V351HPU1 (includes shipping & handling) at $230.00. Please contact us at the phone number below, so we can obtain your credit card information (Visa/MC) for the order.

I guess I was expecting too much. Boo hoo!

Found one on eBay for $175 (includes shipping & handling). Thanks for reading my rant

Thanks Dennis,
The rest of us learned that we should expect 350 psi from a new pump, and 250 is time to trash it. I have a hand-me-down unit from a friend that needs testing before I start drilling and screwing. Now to dig out a gauge, visit the plumbing supply, and get some hydraulic oil (20 weight I believe) and my battery.

Any type of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is all you need.

I am just cruising old repair threads and came to this and wondered what was the logic as to why the new pump fixed the tab retraction problem ??? It sounded like the solenoids were checked but they must have been faulty ???

Didn't get a real good answer from them as to why they would extend but wouldn't retract. Just the pressure was low.

Usually, that's a a bad solenoid valve.
