Advice from the resident cheapskate:
Buy the cheapest Garmin chart plotter you can find (in B &W), then spring for a Blue Chart software package (with the up to date charts). Next, hook it to a laptop with a cable and fire it up using FREE N-Route software from Garmin. The result is a HUGE, color GPS that rivals units that sell for many thousands of dollars.

When first bought Bluechart, 8 years ago, I was pleased to find it had the ability to plot the current GPS location. After I installed my first update that feature dissappeared, which I did not realize until AFTER I had unknowlingly "converted" all my 200+ GPS waypoints to the new format and was unable to go back to the earlier version. The plotting software "addon" was now only available for purchase, I was not a happy camper but I was not yet in a position to need a chart plotter. Earlier this year I found a program (GPSbabel) at http://www.gpsbabel.org/downloaded.html that could convert me back but the old Bluechart now felt clunky next to the latest version, and I had already bought a Standard Horizon Chart Plotter from a friend for $800 which I felt was a steal, but now I can hook up that 32" LCD. After hopeless searching the Garmin site for the download I've given up. Jeff, please post the link

Absolutely. That's what I have, in fact. The cable (got it off eBay) both supplies 12 volt battery power to the unit, it sends the signal to the lap top.
Jeff
PS: AA batteries will only last a few hours in a handheld GPS.

Feff You all have intrigued me with this chartplotter info. With 5 grown kids gone , i got my hands on all kinds of computer junk. Here we go. If i would get a Garmin GPS seiral receiver for a PC , add a small lap top and download a program from Garmin ?? Read the post to Wayne , and was wondering if could away with the hand held ? Trying to use what i got.

Correct. Garmin will burn you a C-note for their Blue Chart software (on a CD) that you have to upload into the handheld (and unlock the codes). From then on it's all downhill! I really like this setup, plus I use the Blue Chart software on my regular PC. Tons of fun! I plot out imaginary trips, set up way points, measure the mileage, etc. And without burning any gas! Jeff Here's what the laptop display looks like. The "Please Select GPS" note is there because it's not connected. Normally, speed and compass reading appears there. Pretty damn nice, eh! And it costs a fraction of what a compatible, large, color screen chart plotter costs. I like that part best of all!

Thanks, Jeff. I'm getting closer to understanding how all this works.I'm the only one I know who doesn't have a laptop. Will a notebook work or what do I look for in a used laptop? Do you use a external gps antena? Thanks, Wayne

Jeff (with his puny 14 " LCD screen) Well since some of you guys make Santa look young, I thought the LARGE screen might make it a bit easier for you to read. BUT FIRST I NEED THE LINK FOR THE N-ROUTE UTILITY!

I will only sell Intel CPU's the AMD run hot and burn up more often, es-specially when in the confines of a laptop. As solid state drives come down in price I would absolutely invest in one, but a thumb drive might just work as a substitute today. I would mount the laptop sideways so the HDD read/write heads will not slap against the platters when pounding the waves. And don't forget that 32" flat screen. We had some plastic/rubbery "roll up" keyboards, water proof and naturally non-skid. A mounted track ball would probally be a good mouse replacement. The touch pads get funky when they get wet. CPU RAM HDD CD/DVD SCREEN WINDOWS Latitude D410 5XZLLB1 1.73 Centrino 1024 60 None 12.1" XPP $250 Latitude D520 BTHRCD1 1.66 Core 2 Duo (T5500) 2048 80 CDRW/DVD 15" None $400 Latitude X300 2RBM171 1.4 Centrino 640 30 None 12.1" XPP $200 hinge going bad

I have an Asus eeePC that is all solid state (no moving parts) and a $30 gps receiver that plugs in to a serial port, just mount it above the aluminum. Charts are free, and there is lots of software out there. The 10" screen is a little small but the eeePC will drive an external monitor, I just don't have one. Total cost would be around $400, but a cheaper eeePC would do, my 32 Gb flash drive is bigger than needed.
The down side is that only the GPS receiver head is waterproof. It would be nice to have a real plotter, like the Raymarine units.
