:d/ Starboard motor out of the hole and torn down. We decided to rebuild her in the boat. Those of you with aft cabins are familiar with the challenge of getting the motor outBrick wall New pistons, rings, bearings on order, picking up tomorrow. If any one knows where I can pick up a total rebuild gasket kit for a 440, that would be great. None of my suppliers deal in Chryslers anymore and the local parts stores want a ton of money for a marine kit. I'll search for this tomorrow. dropping 3 sets of heads off at the machine shop, hopefully he be able to get me 2 good heads from them.Friday Honeing out the cylinders and putting new pistons in.Applause

Can I ask what ultimatly drove the need to do the re-build and how many hours did they have.

I see on ebay of all places a seller of marine re-build kits for the 440's, he includes VICTOR REINZ gaskets which I have always felt were very good gaskets. Around here I would go to NAPA for Victor gaskets.

Thanks Doc Marysville is one of my suppliers they don't do alotwith Chrysler anymore. NAPA (stands for never any parts avaliable) will probably have to be the place, I'll just be patient until parts come in. There was a place over in NC that dealt strictly in Chryslers I'll try an find them also.
The eason Doug is. We munched a piston up pretty good, no damage to the block just the piston, this far into it we'll make the whole thing new by the time we're done, plenty of beer on board for a total rebuild yeeehaw! Have no idea on the hours on the motors. From the looks of the one we got scattered all about the boat right now, not many, The Gen has an hour meterand it reads 500. Now IF and I repeat IF that is true then I feel comfortable about the motors not having too many on them. The boat sat in storage for a number of years and before that hardly left the dock according to previous owners family. I'm just excited to be able to leave the dock for the first time in 2 years myself. This boat is screaming to get out on the water. Paint work just about complete, just have to paint below the rub rail and that will be done, next the interior restore. Thats the wife department I've been assigned the labor end of that job.

Hey Capt T, Is the starboard standard or reverse rotation? My brain is not working right now...I think its standard, BUT if not, and you MAY already know all about this... please know that reverse rotation engines are NOT put together exactly the same as a standard one and a FEW of the parts are different. Let me know if you need a little more detail as to what to look for.

Starboard would be reverse unless reversed in the transmission.

Bill, as with all things around me it's assbackwards. starboard is standard rotation. They switched it at the tranny.

Capt T,
I think that being reversed in the tranny is a good thing! Means both engines are identical & standard rotation.

I have the same engine setup with my 440's, But we don't have std. rotation engines on both sides, just the Starbord and the port is reversed, just the opposite of the small block boats and then they reversed the rotation in the transmissions.

I would like to know why ???

Was it better, easier or cheaper for an engineering reason to build rotation reversing transmissions at the 1.91 to 1 ratio than to not do it ??? I would love to have one trans each way and (2) standard rotation engines.

BigM Doug, mine are set up like yours. reversed on the port side. rather confusing if you ask med'oh! why they didnt just use to standard rotations is beyond me!Think

If both props turn the same direction, the boat will want to go in a circle. So either one transmission reverses the rotation, or one engine turns backwards. "reverse rotation" --Ed

Mine is a sedan and my generator is mounted centerline like yours but it is rearward of the engines and wide open between the motors. It makes engine service easier but the gen. is a little tough but maybe no worse than having it between the motors. Is you boat out of the water this winter while you are doing this work or doing it while floating. I assume yours is a 39, do you know the exact specs on the propellor shafts, as far as length.

Doug she is in the water during entire restore project. Mine is actually a 37 aft cabin. Cause of the aft cabin they had to mount the gen where it is which makes it a pain to work on the motors always unbolting the gen to slide it around and outta the way. I winterized a 37 sedan last week that was set up like yours, I felt as the I had died and gone to Marinette heavenPray Sorry never really took the time to meassure the shafts while we transported her down here so I can't help you there.

Ed, they are reversed at the transmissions to help prevent me from lookin like a blundering fool..... Well at least TRY to prevent me from lookin like a blundering fool doesn't always work thoughWhistle

HERE IS THE COMPARISON PIC. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE A FULL OR NEARLY FULL BULKHEAD JUST BEHIND THE ENGINES AND I ASSUME IN FRONT ALSO. DO YOUR ENGINES SIT SO CLOSE TO THE FORWARD BULKHEAD THAT THEY HAD TO TRIM NOTCHES IN THE VERTICLE ALUMINUM "U" CHANNELS TO FIT THE LOWER PART OF THE CRANK PULLIES ??? I COULD NOT REMOVE THE LOWER CRANK PULLY IF I NEEDED WITHOUT DECOUPLING THE SHAFTS AND SLIDING THE ENGINES REARWARD. THEY LOOK TO HAVE TRIMMED THAT VERTICLE SUPPORT JUST ENOUGH TO ALLOW A BELT CHANGE IF NEEDED.

Mine were set back far enough to do minimul work on the front of the engines. Where your Gen sits is where the stairs going down into my aft cabin are.

Doug, had a piston come apart. Near as I can figure, by the looks of the other pistons this motor was run outta time for extended period. My geuss anyway.

Two conclusions:

1. I'm never buying an aft cabin boat.

2. Wow! Y'all got some ambition!

I'm impressed.
