I continue to ponder future power plants for my 29.
I have come to the following conclusions

1. I no longer or every had the ability and now physically able to do the work myself.
2. Chrysler engines while great for their time are now probably not the best choice for re-power.
3. I am more interested in extended range fuel efficeincy rather than speed.
4. I am interested in small Yanmar Diesels. Very reliable and fuel efficeint.
5. Would help if anyone out there has this conversion.

My local marina said they could do it. I asked how many they have done.. NONE! So their estimate was time and materials only!

I am looking to be able to travel a min of 175-200 miles on 100 gallons of fuel. Speed cruise of 10-12 would be fine.

I would like to repaint the hull etc. however the power plant is the heart of the beast and they are 22 years old running well for now.

Iif you do a cost/ benefit analysis, you'd see that rebuilt Chryslers with an auxiliary tank would be much cheaper than going to diesels.

Received a reply from John A. He has not done any diesel conversions but estimated the cost for twins around 45K plus 5K for installation. If I would ship boat up there about 3K each way.

I can buy a small trawler for that price.

I agree gas is the only reasonable option. I disagree with rebuilding the chryslers. Blocks are easy but by the time you mess with new manifolds, alternators, starters, fuel pumps, carbs etc. it just is not worth it in my opinion. I would prefer to put new crate engines in if I am going to go through the expense of pulling out engines.

No room however for aux. fuel tank in a 29.

But luckly my engines are still sound so not decision time yet.. I hope!

I had a diesel engine in my 28' and it was no speedboat but ran very economically.

If you convert, use a turbocharged diesel that produces similar horsepower at similar engine speeds and doesn't weigh too much. The biggest problems with my 32' are matching the props and the added weight of the diesels.

You can get used diesels pretty cheap. about the price of a new gas engine. A used diesel is OK, they last a long time.

I think the project is a good idea - diesels and aluminum hulls go well together. But ask yourself why you want a diesel, and what you are willing to give up. The lady who bought my 28' put a chrysler back in and was very happy with it.

I am working on a conversion writeup for my website. Unfortunately, geocities is off the air and I haven't finished building the new site...
