As one of the site admins helping back up Joe Howard, I've been vetting new users. Essentially, that means ok'ing them to post messages. It's an imperfect process since one has few clues as to whether a new user applying to join the forum is kosher - a genuine article or a mischief maker. Recently, I started noticing some strange names (like this one today: KeenceripDuer) behind the applications. Lots of them. There were three today alone, prompting me to write this. I checked out the web site for one and it turned out to be a Russian porno site. Excellent photography, I must say, but with enormous potential for delivering a computer virus - almost as bad as an STD. Strange names by themselves (think Fastjeff - Jralbert - Docsnow - SpeedyGonzales) aren't enough to disqualify a new user, but I try to look for other signs that suggest something is amiss. This is a flag to say that I won't catch them all. So, be cautious when you click on a link (that is always good advice in however you compute) and download with your eyes open. Someone once told me it's a matter of practicing safe hex.

..."Strange names by themselves (think Fastjeff..."
I resemble that remark!
A few days ago, while Goggling for welder parts, I accidentally downloaded a rogue nightmare called 'Security Tool". This insidious monster took over my computer completely. Fortunately, the wife's was still okay so I Goggled a fix for it (Spyware Doctor, that I'm not too happy about since my PC slowed way the hell down. Next I'll have to spring for their PC speed up package--more money!)

I have a couple of anti-spyware programs that I run occasionally. Don't need to leave them running all the time (at least that works for me) although that gives instant and probably better protection. Anytime you get one of those popups promising a free scan because you may lack certain protections, quickly navigate away from it. At best they are heavy-handed sales pitches and at worst they are the worst.

When in doubt, rest your mouse arrow on the link and look in the bottom of the browser window. Usually in the bottom left. There you should see the actual link. If it looks fishy or foreign, don't click! For example www.yahoo.comUse Sunbelt CounterSpy for spware/adware etc removal. Its top of the line for that type of protection protection. Try AVG for antivirus. Its free! Make sure all protection software is automatically kept up to date. Also get in habbit of manually updating it just to make sure everything is functioning. And be skeptical of everything on the net. Use Google to review a program before you download and install it. -Karl

Question:
Is having multiple spyware protection programs running on the same computer a problem, and does its slow a PC down?
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff Yes & no. Multiple spyware or antivirus programs that are always running in the background can interfere with each other and by design, anything that runs in the background is using system resources, ie RAM/memory. If you have multiple spyware programs installed but only run them manually you will probably be ok. Unfortunately most antivirus/spyware/firewall etc program are built to run behind the scenes all the time. Unless you can disable "active protection" or whatever that vender calls it you run the risk of the programs butting heads. I do know that while installing Counterspy it will warn you if Spybot Search & Destroy is installed. Both are good anti spyware programs but they may not work well together. Ideally you only want one software suite running on the computer at a time. I run AVG Internet Security suite which includes firewall, anti spyware, anti virus. Once in a while I'll run Trend Micro Online House Call to scan for anything AVG may have missed. It runs via the web directly from Trend Micro website. They also make a great protection package. Before you purchase or try any type of "system protection program" search Google for reviews on it. Most are junk or sub-par. Only a few receive consistent high marks. And DON'T EVER click on any windows that pop up and say your computer is infected and you must buy program X to fix the problem. Its a scam to get your credit card number. -Karl

Here's an example of what I was decribing. This morning, there were four suspicious "new users" applying for forum access. One of them gave the following as his location: "poomyporopr urbardobalm"/
Deleted!

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to disable one of my anti-virus programs. The slowdown began when i added the new one.

Karl for Emperor of the World!
I uninstalled my never used Spybot program and all is well again.
Thanks, Karl! I owe you one.

Jeff,
Glad it worked. Be safe out there on the World Wide Wibble and never ever ever ever give your personal information or credit card info to anyone on the web that you don't know or who is trying to scare it out of you. If you get a suspicious email from your bank or credit card company asking for info due to account closure or other problems, go to your paperwork, get the number and call them by phone.

An Update: since I posted the note at the top of this thread, there have been many, many attempts by suspected (by me) bad actors trying to access our site as members. The only reason I think they want to do that is to post a link, hoping you'll click and handing off some nasty virus, spyware, etc to you. When in doubt, I delete these attempted member requests. I suspect they are being automatically generated. I can't think of anyone with enuf time on their hands to do this manually. So...as has been duly noted, be careful where you click.
