Hi Everyone, Several of you know that I boat on the upper Chesapeake. FastJeff, TR Guy79, and SEVERAL other are all in the general area too. Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbour is my marina and the Bohemia River is some of the NICEST water on the Bay to anchor and have fun in. Well since we have been getting unprecedented amounts of snow this year...there has been some Problems. Bohemia Bay, Georgetown, Tollchester and Roch Hall all experienced catastrophic covered shed failure this year. I was at Bo Bay on Sat and took ALOT of Pics...here are just a few for you to see...and a LINK to the Georgetown pics that someone else took. MY Boat was NOT under the shed and has ZERO damage.

E Dock Shed completly collapsed
D Dock Shed partial collapse and the rest is leaning. It will HAVE to be taken down. They are working on getting all the boats out from under it.
G Dock Car Port Partial collapse
plus a Holiday Mansion House Baot owned by friends of mine ROLLED in its slip from the SNOW WEIGHT!

Look at your own discretion...Its BAD! Im not sure if all the slips were full but it was close...E dock holds 46 boats, slips are 50' on one side and 60' on the other.

Georgetown Pics are http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f171/froggy3k/

Bill,
Very nice pictures. Sad for the boat owners. I can't imagine keeping boats in water up there, we have NO boats in water in central IL.

Roger, There are ALOT of boats that stayed in this year, mine being one of them. My marina has a bubbler system that works very well so Ice isnt really a problem. In previos years that I have stayed in with other boats, It was nice to go down and go for a ride if there was no ice about. Anti freeze is cheap and a beautiful winter ride is PRICELESS! I have been out on the bay with 10in of snow on the decks and more coming down. One year we took a ride at LEAST one time every month of the year!! I have taken the last ride of the year on Dec 31 and the first ride of the year on Jan 1. I LOVE being out there! I have pics from alot of different winter rides...all are older so I will have to have them scanned, but eventually I will post some. I KNOW it is a LONG ways off BUT If all goes as planned I want to do the Annapolis, the Kent Island, and Rock Hall Parades of Lights in DEC 2010 and MAYBE NEW YEARS on the boat at Inner Harbor Baltimore. Have to see how this year goes.

Jeff You may have had my old email address. My new one is: Jazman99@verizon.net Thank You for TRYING

We have been through that here on the ohio in the pool between Cincinatti and louisville in recent years. Saw the docks sink from load and either pulldown by the ropes or press down with the roofs and sink or damage many boats, even pulled a 53 Hat down enough to take water in the air intake and sink it. The fella next to me lost his houseboat and layed out 1 year before going stir crazy and getting another boat.

Lessons learned for me is to keep close tabs on the marina during heavy snow prediction and get the boat out on anchor if it ever happens again.

Here in Charleston are Marina is Charleston Boat Club (est. 1938). We have a group of very active members & 3 incredible employees that watch out for our covered slips. We almost had a similar incident in December when the snow was so wet. Members & employees worked together, shoveled the walk ways, started the fire pump and hosed the snow load off of our roofs before the weight could do any dammage !

A few years ago we had a wet 30" snowfall and clasped a marina roof. The failure mode on that one was the weight pushed the fingers under and warped the support structure causing the clasped. The docks with larger floats did not fail. The marina rebuilt with larger floats, used the old ones are going to build a non-covered slips.

One interesting note, the marina was not liable for the boats damage. The individual boaters were liable for their repairs.

If you read the fine print on your slip aggreement will clearly state that they are not liable for damage while using their facility. Fire, theft, and other damage.

Now if you slip and fall on their docks then your have the option to file civil action.

Just like renting an apartment. If the building burns down your own insurance will cover your damages to extent of the policy.

Looking at all the boats that are damaged, reminds me of what I have seen here after the Huricanes come thru. I have for years gone in after the storms and worked for insurance Companies. Some times buying Salvage, selling it or picking the boats up with cranes and putting them in secured salvage yards. It is truly heartbreaking to see the families and the boats, knowing how much they loved them. Here however most have lost not only thier boats but also thier homes too. When you are working for the insurance Companies, you are living in whats left of a hotel, generators, barbed wire and security gaurds--ALSO FOOD AND WATER. I used to leave and go out to try to find owners and take food and water for the people. One man told me he spent all day trying to find food for his family, his boat was the last thing on his mind-these people are desperate. As you guys up north will soon see your market will be flooded with REPAIRED BOATS that people will buy and try to resell with out-disclosing thier past history. I have seen Barnacles up under the inside of DASHBOARDS!! Had a surveyor in a engine room one day run his hand up in a exhaust hose, look up at me and say,THIS BOAT EVER SINK??? He then pulled out a handful of seaweed from inside the exhaust vent hose. Look for boats where the walls have been stained darker { this hides the water stains} Pull a title abstract on a boat you buy, this will tell you all the past owners-if a insurance co. comes up as owner-YOU GOT A PROBLEM!! I just walked away from a 70footer and a $400,000 deal, I found out the boat had sunk and was repaired. The current owners didn't want to disclose repairs or history. They are now trying to sell her themselves!! ALWAYS GET A REALLY GOOD SURVEYOR. I know one here in Fl. who will travel and knows what to look for, we have seen it ALL!!! Sorrydog

I hate to say it, but there's another way to look at this: Some of those boats are owned by people who can't afford them and can't sell them for what they owe on them. To THESE people, the collapse was a blessing.

How would an insurance company pay out on a boat that has depreciated to well below what is owed as a result of this economy. Would they be within their right to pay replacment value or do they have an obligation to wards payoff for any reason. I assumed a guy could expect a partial check and some remaining debton a boat that was totaled. Really curious if someone here in in insurance...
