Been gone for awhile,
Jeff, The first seaon with my M, I used the trilux from wholesale marine, put it on over old trilux (two yrs old)
187 a gal, at the end of the season I had worn areas from the friction, Talked to the Schilling folks and decided to try it, Scuffed up the trilux with 60 grit on the end of dry wall sanding stick and pressured washered clean, applied the schilling paint, seemed like it took longer to dry but he finish was glossier than trilux. Had many coments on the job. At the end of season there was some algea growth at the water line but the bottom was very clean and the worn areas were the same as where the trilux was. At the time of pullout the sides washed clean, I didn't scrub the sides as some folks do here during the summer. They claim it's good for fresh water, it does not have the biocide chems trilux has for fending off micro organisms but relies on friction for the shedding process. I will use it again this year, also my boat has the barrier coat e-2000 on it also.

Probably everyone already knows this (I am not much of a paint guy) but at an auto paint store you can buy scratch pads that can be used between coats. They work awfully well, and it is easier to keep yourself clean of bottom paint when using them.

I've painted a coat of Trilux33 over the previous coat, sometimes sanding a bit and sometimes not (depends on my back, the weather - the usual). Not much difference. But the mfr doesn't contemplate you putting it on top of scum so you'll have to scuff away the crud before topcoating. By the way, I used blue as a signal coat and recoat with black. When I see blue, I know where the top coat has worn more or less. Any topcoat color is fine - you hardly see it anyway.

Thanks, John. I may take you up on that.

Last year I bought my 39 sedan. I had Mirror Image in Catawba do a complete bottom job. Sandblast, etching primer, barrier coat. I had the great idea of providing the bottom paint to save money since they use trilux. So I went to Schilling and got the paint. I ended up not saving anything because there was extra labor to sand between coats! I was in a hurry to get the boat in the water, so I don't think the paint dried enough. Anyways, the paint did look Sharp and I was still satisfied with the performance. It is purely an ablative paint and I still got in the water and did periodic scrubbing. The moral of the story: expect to sand between coats and I'm pretty sure you can't ship it. In case anyone wants to know, mirror image charged approximately $4,000.00 for the job and was well worth it. I was very satisfied. They are very professional and have a lot of experience with. Big M's.
