From FastJeff: A tip on removing exhaust systems: Drain the coolant from the engine, the manifold and the risers FIRST or you will get water in the motor through the exhaust ports. A tip on installing manifolds: Make up a couple of long studs with a saw cut in the end for a screw driver. Put these in the ends of the head, slip the gaskets in place, then the manifold. Much easier! Then install the bolts before removing the studs. Final tip: Try to buy exhaust manifold gaskets that are ONE PIECE! Some are three piece, and those end gaskets will drive you batty! Then can go on a dozen different ways, but only one way won't leak. Also, don't buy 318/ 360 automotive exhaust manifold gaskets--the ports are too big and they will leak. My favorite gaskets are those used on early 273 cube Mopar V-8s--one piece, and the ports are much smaller. (I had a part number for it but it's no longer valid.) Finally, I use grade 8 steel bolts (not stainless) with lots of anti-seize on the threads, and I clean the head threads out with a tap if they need it. (If the bolt won't screw in by hand, they need it.) Tighten them down, run the motor, then tighten them down again. They'll need it.
