I have noticed on several of the Big M photos a very clean stern boarding ladder access.
My boat has a ladder but requires climbing over the stern rail.

I thought about just cutting the rail to provide access but that would make the rail very weak. I have seen on other M's the ladder is incorporated into the stantions to provide support.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Me TOO ! Mine is like yours but would love to have easier access to swim platform. It gets harder every year to get over the rail! I also would like to find a couple of matching ladder steps.

My 37 has a walk through rail...the ladder steps are teak though...I will TRY to find a few pics of it for you to see. Maybe You can change Yours to match .

I have a hinged section in the middle of the rail to allow access to the dive platform. It is pretty strong, I don't think that the rail is all that weak, and it is well supported. I would never get over the transom without it.

I wish my 39 sedan was like the 41 sedan at our dock and had a swingout door in the transom. I really like that setup.

Me too, and I'm thinking on getting out the Sawzall. Mine wouldn't have a door, though--I'd put a chain across with a snap to keep the grand kiddies safe. It's doubtful that a wave could make it past the dink boat and swim platform to flood the cockpit.

If you cut all the way down to the cockpit sole, then you also have the world's best drain. I have sailed sailboats with this "open transom" design and yes, they do take water in in bad conditions, but it leaves again in a hurry. And of course, under sail you are deliberately doing stuff that risks water coming aboard....
