I wish they done a better job of keeping the bottom clean for the aggravation of dealing with them. Still the best marina on the ohio. No floods, good docks and good people. The carp are a real pain so I'll even dock us a couple of points for that. You have to drink more beer to not hear them. I am wondering how much worse it will be in the aluminum hulled marinette than my Bert.

Just think of an empty beer can that you just keep flicking with your finger . We love Carol and everyone we met there were great. Used to come down two or three times a year and really enjoyed it. From our house it is about the same as going to RIVERSIDE but I have to go to Tricounty to work on Saterday and Warsaw is too far

Excellent write up!

One thing about those semi-displacement hulls: Going slow they get great gas mileage, and they will go 15 knots or more, but the gas mileage "walks the plank" above 6 or 7 knots.

Marinettes are true planing hulls. They're not speedboats, but neither are they displacement or semi-displacement hulls. They all cruise at 2.5 to 3 times hull speed, and that's absolutely planing. (Hull speed in knots assumed to be 1.34 x square root of waterline length).

Anything above hull (aka displacement) speed takes lots of power, and hence lots of gas. True displacement hulls are the most efficient at displacement speeds; planing boats going slow only seem efficient compared to the prodigious fuel consumption when they're planing.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but the planing/displacement issue seemed fundamental, and therefore important....

..."planing boats going slow only seem efficient compared to the prodigious fuel consumption when they're planing. "

Have to inset a caveat here: The gas mileage curve (0 to best cruising speed) is highest at around 4 to 6 mph, goes way down (bad) at 7 to 12 mph, then improves while on plane. My 32 footer gets its best on-plane gas mileage at about 14 mph (1.5 mpg). Above that the mileage slowly decreases up to where the secondaries open, then WHAMO!

Jeff

PS: I see boaters going along at half plane all the time, their boats 'climbing uphill' and wasting gas like crazy. No doubt their skippers--lacking a Flo Scan--think they're "saving gas".

Excellent point. What rpms are you running at 14 mph?

On mine, 2,000 rpms. (I am deliberately over-propped.) The boat will maintain plane with a full load of passengers at that throttle setting even after making a full lock, 360 degree turn. I stunned a plastic boat buddy of mine doing that once.

I need to find a Marinette emblem for the front. One of them was very brittle and crumbled into too many pieces to glue back together. Motors are coming along fine and the transmissions are done. Now come the fun part...new packings on the prop and rudder shafts. and E-paint E.Z.O bottom paint system.

Guys: How many of us would KILL to have our boat in a shed like that over the winter, where we could make her perfect and pretty!

That's widener boat works shop located at Gibralter Boat Yard. She's been in their for almost a year. She's getting pulled out in a week or so and then its time for the engines to get reinstalled, flybridge mounted, window tracks and bottom paint and shaft and rudder packing. then.....

Yes it is AL's fiberglass or...use to be. Micky Widener and his brother took over Al's business and now it's called Widener Boat works.
Al now owns what used to be Mikes Marine supply. Bill ...I see your from the Island like me or ...like I was.
This is George Mathis's old boat "Bare Necessity" that was at the foot of church road and west river road in the covered boat well.
You may have known my father Bill Davison. He was a member of the Grosse Ile Power squadron for many years and G.B.Y. is where we docked our boat for almost 40 years.

Good news. my baby finally made it out of the paint shop and the fly bridge is back on. I just got my onan mcck parts in today and also got new teleflex ch4451 throttle / shift controls for the bridge ordered today. I picked up the trannys 2 weeks ago and now we wait for lunati to regrind the cams and get them back to Greg for assembly of the engines.

I will take pic and post when I get time

Thanks to everyone for all your help and know how. we're almost their but we are sure not out of the woods just yet.

oh and one more question. I'm replacing the bilge pumps and i'm wondering which brand to go with ...lovett or Rule ?
