You could replace it with a hydraulic system. There's a write up doing that on this site.

I have hydraulic steering on my 32 and imo it is the only way to go. Zero screwing around in the 12 years I've had it.
When I die I hope my wife sells my stuff for more than I told her I paid for it.

Any idea what would be wrong with the system in place and what it might take to fix it?

Thanks

Thanks, I would want it fixed before I would purchace the boat or use the cost and labor of fixing it for price reduction.
It has a few known issues that would need to be taken care of for a sale.

Thanks

the latching mechanism down by the rudder in the bilge is probably the culprit. It is mechanical and depending on what area of the country you are boating in, salt or fresh water. These areas need some TLC. [lube] Cables are also an issue. They corrode inside after a while. 30 -40 years.
try doing a search on steering on this forum. Im sure there is a write up on this.

PS I too went with hydraulic steering on both my Marinettes.

Thanks Bill, I have a feeling it's the latching mechanism. Perhaps down the road I would change things out but I just want the boat to fully function as it should before buying unless changes can be made in the price.
