Thinking about upgrading Beth's (The Admiral) boat hook to a Landing Loop. Anyone tried this?

Thought I was the only one having a hard time docking the boat, especially if the wind is blowing the wrong way. One trick that I was taught was to leave a line tied to the dock, with the eye on the other end. Leave the eye open and hanging out over the edge of the dock so that when you come back you can hook it with the boat hook. The one I leave is set at the right length to drop over my forward cleat- away from the props- and the I just back up until it pulls tight. That will swing me over against the dock and in the proper spot so I don't hit the boat behind me.--Ed

We always leave our lines tied to pilings and adjusted at the slip. It takes a while to get them all right, but once you do it's a simple matter of hooking them up. I use the 'eye' end for the bow lines, and a tape mark on the other lines that lines up with the cleat.

Jeff

PS: We have another, complete set of lines for when we slip out.

I always have the dock lines attatched to the slip with the loop end going to the boat cleat. As Jeff said it takes a little time to get adjusted just right but once it is it is. Also have a compleat set with extra for use when out. Hell dockline is the cheapest thing for boating but you see high$$$$boats with no dockline

Forgot to add that I added a 'cheater line' between the pilings so we can walk the boat out before dropping her in gear. The cheater line is also handy for draping the lines over (and keeping the little darlings out of the props!)

Jeff

PS: You can see the cheater line in the photo. Great thing to use old, worn out anchor line for (which where it came from. Thrifty!)

Jeff,

Wow they sure have short fingers coming off the main dock do U get a cut in the slip fee for that?
Now I see why U had to alter your railing by putting in that gate Think

Yeah, but then how do I launch my dink boat every day? And I'd have to give up the gorgeous view we have from the cockpit deck.

Jeff,

I envy you your view. My view ahead is of the backs of other boats, not all of them particularly attractive. So, I dock stern in. I don't need to walk the boat out, but I have rigged lines from post to post to hang big fenders on, we are that tight.

Here's our view out the back as we sit there, sipping a cool one and enjoying boating.
