Okay here goes. Just met a guy who bought a 1976 sedan bridge. Nice BigM He is lookin forward to joining the forum. either previous owners color blind or didn't care about wiring colors. Black wire hooked to positive side of battery, makes battery charge needle jump all over the place. We'll trace that one tomorrow disconnected it for time being. He was told head worked fine. Well when we couldn't get it to work the normal way we tried direct wire to battery just to see if it would kick. OOPSWhistle the ground wire lit up and melted, Obviously motor locked up, time for new head I think. Now that the fun is over:d/ , time for my question.
He has an anchor windlass I've never heard of. Maybe original equipment, really a neat little unitDrool . Name on the side of it is GOOD AUTOMATIC WINDLASS. It quit working today, I checked the solenoids they are fine and we get power to the gear motor when up or down switch is engaged. Has anybody ever heard of this Co. before and are there any parts available for it. Thanks

We have a GOOD windlass on ours. I'm pretty sure it factory installed. You can still get parts for these. They also offer a option that you can send it in for a rebuild.
As for your problem. Try tapping on the motor while someone works the switch. Maybe the brushes are hanging up. A neighbor at the marina had one do the same thing. He replaced the motor and all was fine.

Peter that would be great if you could. Looks like a real simple device, but having the manual for the parts is alway's an added plus. Thank you.Applause

I'm in the process of installing my "Good Windlass" windlass. I have the manual somewhere as well. Can't remember if they had a UP kill switch...don't think so.

Last year I expirmented by hot wiring it to a battery I hauled up to the anchor locker.
I tried my existing anchor line but it would not drop...too stiff so now I need to break down and drop $400 and buy 300 feet of their "Good Anchor Line."

Joe,
Mine is just a montary single pole double throw with center off. You have to hold switch forward to lift anchor; release to stop.

In looking for line for my windlass I came across an 8 plait as opposed to the normal 3 strand nylon anchor line. This 8 plait seems to solve a couple of challenges I have. First it is extremely suppleand it should feed through my "Good Windlass" just fine. Then it takes only 1/3 of the stowage as normal 3 plait line. This means I can carry more of it to anchor into those 200' deep shipwrecks.

I like the supple line too but I would call GOOD and ask them before you buy, I think from experience that they are picky about the anchor line running through them and I would pay the price to GOOD for a new one.

From TheHullTruth.com

"Doublehook12-30-2008, 06:51 PM
Believe me the ONLY anchor rope to use is the 8 plait , i have a good windlass and the manufacture said only to use there special made 3 strand rope , it would still kink and get twisted so i went back to the 8 plait that i have allways used and it worked perfect. I have 600 ft. in my locker and it looks like 100 ft. of 3 strand rope."

I got outside of my own experiances and done some reading online about the 8 plait line and using it in windlass apps. and i have to say Computer Joe is in the majority here !!! Some say not enough stretch but most say it is fine and works better.
