I am hoping to find out what I can do to get some steering in my Sportsman before spring. I have a Mercruiser I/O (Kiekhaufer) and a nice 30" wheel, and 2 gold colored racks. I need the pinion gear/shaft/helm assembly and a cable. Problem is it from the 60's and I don't really know who made it. I belive it to be a Mercruser "RideGuide" rig. The cable should be about 21-22' end to end so if any body has a spare parts project laying around please let me know if you can bare to part with them.

P/C Joe,

This is just a suggestion but get rid of that cable steering d'oh! & get a power assist Hydr. system =d&gt plus in the future u’ll be able to add a auto pilot if so desired. It’s isn’t any more trouble than putting in new cables; Anxious plus in the future u’ll be able to add a auto pilot if so desired. It’s isn’t any more trouble than putting in new cables Think U’ll love yourself for the up grade Applause OOP's forgot it'll cost a few $$$ more Think

Doc,

I have an I/O (Mercruiser) and think I need the same type of cable to work. The steering is vacum assited and was never a problem on my 5000lb SeaRay with the small wheel. This Marinette is suposed to be only 4000lbs so it would be a breeze to steer with the large wheel on her. I think I can add an Autopilot to most any boat. Heck I looked at one for my tiller steered Sailboat.

Please let me know if I'm wrong, my expirence is limited.

C / J,

I’m not sure about vacuum assist & if it’s adaptable to a Auto Pilot but when I was in the market for one every Co. I spoke to said I need Hyd. assist steering to use a auto pilot. I didn’t check on the one that fits on the helm wheel they where not compatible at the time for a 32' vessel.

Those autopilots don't have a lot of power and they mount close to the hub of your wheel and loose the leverage of a big wheel. The companies probally compared your big M to a 32' wooden or glass boat that would weigh a lot more.

When I got my boat I had a cable and partial helm (the rack). The cable was froze up and someone told me that you can break them loose by twisting the cable instead of push/pulling it. After sitting 6 months with WD40 soaking through I tried it. I broke it alright! Now I'm shopping for another. E-bay has some but I still can not find the pinion gear and helm pieces to mount it with. I thought there would be a junk pile in someone's garage with an old helm. I would rather get the whole shooting match from one person so that it all mates properly and am hesitant getting another cable from e-bay without the pinion gear & helm mount.

Hey Joe,

I just saw your post, so I don't know if you have solved your steering problem yet, I have purchased complete rack and pinion systems from teleflex for smaller boats, and I would think they might have something that would work for you. The last one I bought was a couple of years ago for an 18 ft runabout for about $150.00. Good Luck!
