whats the advantages to wiring for nmea 2000 i have a basic undertsanding of what it does with the integration and all.....is that the only real benefit i could expect ?

NMEA 2000 is a very neat way to link your electronics and, if you have them, electronic engine controls. (Disclosure: I am a former member of NMEA). There is one long cable with terminations on each end, and everything Tees from it, including power. You can mount a Multiport box at each steering station, to handle the stuff there, and connect each box with 1 cable. Sensors are wired by daisy-chaining them, which takes less wire than wiring each to a central terminal block.
There are a couple of different sizes (mini, micro) of cables, for different needs.
This is not cheap, and requires NMEA 2000-compatible components, which in my case would mean "all new".

Maretron has a good design manual for NMEA cabling, featuring (of course) their stuff. Basically, you can buy it all to size and just install it, remembering to support the cables every 18". http://www.maretron.com/products/pdf/Cabling_Catalog/Maretron%20Cabling%20Catalog.pdf
