Several weeks ago we hit a submerged object with the starboard prop. I decided to see if i could change the prop in the 4 foot deep water where "Church Belle" is tied up. With my long arms I can reach under and touch the prop without putting my head under water. The problem was getting the puller connected.

I made two modifications to the puller. First,I ground the tips so that they would fit between the line cutters and the prop hub. Second thing, was to create spring tension across the arms so that it only took one hand to push the puller over the prop into position. I used a small ball bunge to make the tension.

With the shaft nut half threaded on to hold the puller screw in place, the puller easily slipped into place. With the screw tightened snug it only took one hit to the prop hub with a big hammer and she came loose.

As you can see from the photo, only one blade has no damage.

The problem I have always had with gearpullers is that the screw sticks back and interferes with the rudder, so I can't get the thing on straight. I notice that you have quite a long screw on yours. How did it fit past the rudder?

The screw did extend over the rudder on the outside and missed it by one inch.

Looking at the first photo I thought, "how did he get a 3 blade prop off with that puller?" The next photos told the tale!

Jeff

PS: No way my props would come off that easy, however. I had to use heat and a puller to get one off.

Good advice Fishnatic. We plan to haul out next month for a complete inspection and replacement of the anodes. We make the 125 mile trip up to Applegate Cove Marina (www.applegatemarina.com) near Sallisaw Oklahoma where they have a boat lift.
Jeff, with the tapered shaft it shouldn't need heat to break the prop loose.

Regards,
Rich

Wanna bet! That sucker was really on.

Jeff

PS: Note that three bladed props need a different puller than the one pictured; it will only work on 4 bladers.

My props really stick and I will let the marina pop them for me. They have a hydraulic pull that I could never afford.

I've used prop pullers like that, have also found that a 3 jaw gear puller worked fine for a 3 bladed prop. Don't be surprised if you have to put some heat on the prop to get it to pop loose. And just hope you don't have pull the prop. Better things to do with your time and money.--Ed
