My '73 28'twin hardtop express has a leaking starboard rudder packing (or is it a seal) that is quite fast when first launched each season (dripping every second for a day or two, slowing eventually to every 10 seconds or so). Rudder shafts seem tight and I know that pitting can be an issue over time although she has spent her life on lake erie (that might be the problem too considering the water quality sometimes!)
Question is: can the packing (or seal) be tended to without replacement. I'm much more interested in getting it on the water than doing rudder bushings this season. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Unlike a prop shaft packing, you can tight rudder packings up a lot more--long as the rudder will turn. Nd it does NOT have to drip.

Jeff, thanks for the speedy reply. Is there any trick to doing this. I have not torn this apart to understand what the philips head screws around what appears to perhaps be the packing nut actually do. Any tips on tightening this up would be much appreciated. I checked your website and didn't see any real specifics. Is there a rubber seal as another forum post implied, or is it a packing material that is compressed via a packing nut? It sounds from your post that this is the case and it can be firmed up pretty tightly.
Thanks so much for any sage advice.

As I recall (been years since I messed with them) there's a cotter pin to keep the packing nut from rotating on its own. Pull it, spin the nut tighter, and reinsert the pin in a new hole. Yours may be different, but the principle is the same.
