Hi guys, I'm contemplating a new all in one (or seperates if nessessary/cheaper) GPS/depth gauge. Want your recomendations/feedback as to if I should go with and all in one and I was concidering also one that could be moved from FB to helm as needed (less redundancy). I was even thinking about using one of the new, smaller laptops that might be quite inexpensive compared to West Marines options that are in the thousands of dollars. Thoughts? Currently working on the boat is my speedometer (at the helm only no FB speedo) and compasses, would like to update and make navigation easier so I can leave navigation to others and move about the boat a bit more. I guess in a nutshell, I'm asking, if you had to rig it again on your boats, how would you guys do it, with the current options available? Brands name are welcome, as are retailer names and websites. Thanks, Jack

My prejudice is for independent units so if one fails you don't lose the other. For me, most important instrument is depth finder. On the Chesapeake Bay, except in a storm (I usually don't travel at nite), with just a compass I can easily get from one place to another,(We have so many markers and buoys that you can jump between them readily), altho GPS makes it even easier on a longer leg. I have a chart plotter on the bridge and a plain vanilla GPS position readout in the cabin (that one is very old and needs to be replaced with the cheapest thing available).
There have been a number of posts on how to save lots of money by hooking a cheap GPS to a cheap computer and winding up with an excellent large screen display - search for those posts. Nice idea for the cabin.
Meanwhile, if your compass is working well there is no need to replace it. It doesn't require power and is a fabulous backup for GPS direction indicators. There are many links on the web on how to compensate the compass. A quick check would be to compare it to the direction info you get on the GPS (which should be set to "magnetic", not "true" for a comparison).

Jack,

First off nice talking with U over the land line. On the GPS no matter what brand U select make sure U get the largest screen available & in color next get one for the helm & bridge it’s a pain switching them believe on this one I tried it for 2 seasons. Also get a hood for the one on the bridge makes much easier to see in bright sun light. I prefer either a Lowrance, or a Furuno easy to operate even for me. One draw back in getting a combo GPS, Depth finder etc is if one goes U have to replace the whole unit. Than if U get separate ones where is there room for them? Go on line U can find them a lot cheaper than W/M. Don’t know how they stay in business.I’m not a big fan of lap tops as a nav. system them things where made for email & & porn & keeping track of SorryDog incase he ever goes off on one his youthful escapades I can join him & frolic in the Islands with the Mermaids (-; 3 Brewski’s to that. On the compasses have a guy come aboard & recalculate the ones U have a lot cheaper under $70 @ as of 2002 plus he added oil to the one on the F/B bout still working great. U moved the “Big Enough” pretty far northwest R they reading about 7* to 14* off ? Check the Compass inset on a newer Chart. AnyWho this is turning into a novel sure there are more suggestions to come on this topicAnxious

You'll have bad times, but they'll just wake you up to the good times you weren't paying attention to

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Joel, I was leaning towards separates, just for ease and not having to move them around. In the Great Lakes, we get some pretty thick fog and that's when it's really nice to have a GPS on board, you can go many miles without seeing bouys. Also with gps's you can mark underwater structure for fishing and be able to find it later on easily. Will check out the other posts too. Compasses are working great, just in the fog or thick haze I really appreciate the new electronics. Norm, Yeah, appreciate your info on parts, ect. As far as the compasses and correcting them is concerned, they both seem to be quite close to on the money, amazingly enough, worked fabulous and true coming around the mitt, haven't checked in my lake yet (I cracked a brewski once I 'smelled home' too!) but will do so soon (I've had electrical breakdowns in the past on other boats) to make sure the old way to get home is still an option. Laptops seem to be interconnectable with most applications/hardware these days and I believe are going to be more and more commonly seen on boats, just so you don't have to have all those separate units onboard.
