Noticed yesterday that the anodes on my trim tabs are looking REALLY eaten up. CAPAC is staying steady @ -1.0v.

Any thoughts? Boat has only been in the water since Memorial Day weekend....

The trailing edges are jagged, and they look fuzzy. Cant get to them to get a "clear" look. No swim platform yet, and still relegated to the slip.

Yes Jeff, I did get the tool, thank you. Picked up some 1/4" graphite packing. May try and make it down this weekend. My GF comes back from Greece Saturday afternoon, and I have to drop the little on off at her moms Sunday eve, so not sure I will make it..


Anyway... So how do I tell if what I am seeing on the anodes is "normal". On the old plastic boat, the anodes were good for quite a while, only showing minimal wear after a full season...

You have to do the usual detective work to see if you have voltage leaking into the water. Note the CAPAC reading, then start turning things off, starting with the AC power cord, then the batteries. If the reading doesn't change much, then you're anodes are probably okay.

PS: When you repack, have a rag ready to wrap around the shaft to keep the C & D Canal out!

I have not found anything that is operated from the dash that causes a deflection in the meter, other than a bad ground on the port engine. I discovered it this past sunday. It was causing a deflection to 1.3. It is now fixed, and would only be and issue if the ignition was left on. The only other items would be the front bilge (runs occassionaly due to leaky port packing), the cabin lights, and the cabin radio. I will turn them all on next time I am down, and see what I get on the reading.

Graphite packing? Is graphite a conductor of electricity? Maybe consider teflon packing.

Not sure, but I would think I should be ok since the packing gland is isolated from the hull by the rubber hose.

Checked things out on Saturday. I cannot find anything that causes a deflection in the reading. Also, I am now at a 1.05, so there is definately something going on. Disconnected prop shafts, which made no difference, nor did shorepower... Worried that the damn thing is eating itself for some reason, but don't want to pay to haul for nothing. Could it be because I don't have anodes on the rudders ( just remembered). The fuzzy on the tab anodes is about 1/4 inch thick, and is definately corrosion.....

Any thoughts

I've used Gore GFO packing, which is graphite impregnated, for several years now and have not seen any hint of issues. I've also read that the Coast Guard uses Gore packing on its aluminum boats.

I do not think he has a problem. Readings are better than most. I have found that todays new anodes are not as hot as they once were. I repainted and new anodes this fall and put her back in and still need a Mag Guppy to bring the numbers in line.

My numbers were appox -.065 mv prior to haul out and no corrosion found. New anodes brought it up to about -075-085 mv but no deflection when checking isolation.

Numbers will tend to be lower in fresh vs salt or brackish waters.
