I would like to add 2 more batteries for my downriggers, when trolling i alternate back and forth between engines. Can i wire them so that they are always getting a charge . any help w/a wiring diagram would be appreiciated,also proper wire size ete.i have stock alternators,will they be able to handle the job,troll at about 12-13 rpm. thanks Bill

Bill--I run 4 group 31 batteries the 5 downriggers are hooked on the stbd. side, the auto pilot on the port side. I beleive the wire size is 6 gauge. I have stock alt. never run out of power. I troll at 600-800 rpms for 4-6 hrs. hope this helps. John

I made my own diode isolators so I could charge two batteries from one alternator, but if I had it to do over today I would use combiners, that hook the batteries together while charging but separate them when not. thanks doug,i still am not certain how to wire them, what size wires to use. should i hook downriggers right to batteries or a terminal board., any help would be greatlly apppreciated,later Bill . would i need one combiner or two. my present two battery swiches have off and on,would i need more or different ones?

First of U have to know the amps your down riggers draw? Now I have 2 Capt. pak + 2 Big Jon Brutes ES was having a little trouble achieving the 200' per minute on the Brutes ES’s till I ran across this on Great Lakes Fisherman here’s how he & now I get max out of the riggers. He / I here’s how he did it & I copied I have a pair of 800 cranking amp battery’s wired in parallel & a 55 amp alternator running He / I ran 4 AWG wire from battery’s to terminal stripe at the back of the boat (ran 4 AWG back to ground lug BigM necessity xtra $$$$) from terminal stripe to downriggers 12 AWG to match rigger wire. They run great now. One has to remember that the longer the run the heavier gage wire U will need. BTW on the BRUTES there is a 50amp breaker fuse to each one . If U care to view a video of how fast the Brutes are. On the Great Lakes Fisherman Site the post # is # 47819 plus he has a more detailed write up then mine it’s probably 12 /18 months old so U may have to do some searching. Thanks norm, are your alternators stock or newer ones? Fishing is pretty much lake trout,a few stellies and even fewer salmon. I'll read the posting your talking about,get the boat back in the water? did you see my posting about our slips?

Stock as far as I know they are. Think One thing I should mentioned I have 1989 Crusader 350 albeit 55 amp alternator GM or MoPar should be the pretty much the same Like I said I’ll be up that way sometimes mid July I’ll check them slips out than. Leave the alternator hooked directly to the existing battery. Then, wire from that battery to the combiner and then to the new battery. Wire from the new battery to the downrigger motors. I don't know what the downriggers draw, but use wire sizes from the ABYC table, or larger. Note that when the alternator is charging, the outriggers will draw from both batteries, because the combiner will be on. Don't forget to wire the return (ground) side of the batteries with the same size wire at least.
