Most know from reading here that i have been looking high and low for a section of rub rail with no luck and I now have an inside tract to a small extrusion company that could reproduce it from a die that I can have made. I am considering re-doing all of mine to get back that brand new look but it is salty for one guy to take on for just one boat so I was thinking I would gage interest here for anyone else that might be like minded. I'll have to probably purchase 500 lbs. minimum worth at a time so retailing off some of it would help amortize the expense of having the die made. I may make a special deal for 4 or 5 people wanting to go all the way around thier boat to assist me in making it happen. What say ye !!!

P.M. me and let me know if you are interested in any or a bunch or just one stick.

Funny you should ask. the Boss and I were just talking about that yesterday. Depending on cost Think I would be a player for all around my 37 aft cabin.Drool

No John does not even have a 2-3 foot scrap, as he looked for me. I tried Sima and every other lead anyone could throw out so far. I even looked in a bone yard where I heard a guy changed all his out a couple of years ago looking for a short length of his old to fix my bad spot and no luck. Seems to be dried up for a while now and Sima says they don't know if they will order again because of the minimums. I would not consider this route if John had it available or any where wlse for that matter.

I really don't know the cost yet but I am going to try to get the extrusion quoted next week and I will keep the group here informed. Still may hit a dead end, never know till I try. I have a feelng I will have to get i anodizing done at a second source so it will take a little effort to work it all out. If feisible I will be going ahead and getting it made up and will only offer to sell when I have it in my hands. I won't ask anyone to get involved in pre pay or pre order for that matter. Only looking for intrested persons right now to see if there is a market other than my self. If there is not enough interest or it is just too much money I will have the short section I need milled from billet at a friends machine shop to fix my bad spot with a 30 to 40 inch section.

My rub rail is looking a little ruff from going thru the locks on the Tennesse. I took a 4" right angle sander to a section and it cleaned it up better than I expected. Doesn't shine but it will takes the nicks down to where it looks the same. My "Redneck solution" Sorry Dog would understand. Wayne

I have some experience dealing with extruders. If you pay for tooling, then make sure that the die is a deliverable; i.e. delivered to you when your stock is run off. If you do not do this, then they will extrude rubrail for every tom dick and harry, and you will no longer be able to unload yours.

They will tell you that it is "not policy" to allow tooling to leave their plant. You should then tell them that it is not policy for you to pay for tooling that is not yours. Settle for an exclusive-use agreement with some teeth...

I am in plastic's injection molding and all of my tooling is customer owned and very !!! exclusive to them so it sounds like a little edgeier business than plastics or at least more so than how I am used to doing busines. Thanks for the heads up.

This is late in the game to ask but do we know that the 5086 grade of aluminum is also used in the extruded rubrails, I will inquire about appropriateness and extrudeability of it tomorrow and if not I am sure I can get guidence on what grade is best to use.

I don't think making a semi a generic rub rail is any different than the big autoparts store manufacturing their own brands of replacment parts for GM or Ford cars and engines. If there is a desire or market it can be done with a little effort.

From some research the 5086 was used for the hull, deck and swim platform. Superstructure rub rails cabin trim etc are not.

Had a few minutes to kill in the Steak and shake parking lot before my next meeting and wanted to tell everyone interested that it is very likely that I will have this made. Lead time can be as little as 4 to 6 weeks including having the die made. Deciding how much to buy and how to amortize the die is one part of it but another issue is what cut lengths. I want to pole those interested. My boat has at least 2 sections that appear to have come from or been cut down to 12' 3.5", I would guess they were cut from 12'6 " sections. the previous supply of re-poped rub rail was advertised as 9' sections but likely that was for shipping conveinence. Shipping is next I will have to see how long can be shipped via. UPS or see here if people want to drive to pick up so as to have original type lengths. I think the first order will be enough to go all the way around 5-6 boats at least. I done some measuring early this morning on my boat's original moldings and there is no hope for pre drilling as they were somewhat more random then what I had thought as some screw hole spacings were at 12" and others were 12.25" so match drilling from the old molding or intentionally sealing the old holes and just making new doing your own spacing and drilling as you go will be the only options. One other thing is that the clear anodizing is almost a thing of the past and the new outdoor standard for anodizing is the silver matt finish we see on all new aluminum for boats, windows and everything else for thaat matter.

Lets speak up on the cut lengths / shipping issues and then I will ask who's in and that you only make a verbal committment here until it arrives. First come first serve. If we could commit to 8 to 9 boats or more worth the price can come down even more.

Feel free to give me a ring if interested or if you have questions. 812 599 6281 mobile. 39marinette@gmail.com

I would like a "rubrail" made from the foam that is used in the new patrol boats, that orange stuff. It would save on scratches and add floatation. anyone have an answer?

I am wanting to move forward with this and get it coming but was hoping to hear from some of you on the cut lengths, the matt finish silver anodizing before I ordered. Ever if you are not ready to buy some I would still like to hear opinions.

It would be nice to cover a 32' length with 3 pieces, but I believe that UPS will do 8' max. I could be wrong...

Doug and all,
don't know how the rub rail deal is going but,
I was searching for a handrail part and came across this tonight...
http://tacomarine.com/ca...its--rub_rail_kits.html
they make a lot of different extrusions, look on the left hand side of the page and hold down rub rail for more choices
don't know if any of these are close to the rub rail on the BigM

Update:

My supplier has completed the final print and I have approved it for production. Since there was no apparant intrest from anyone at this time I am waiting till fall when I want to at least do my boat. There is just was no sense in buying it sooner than necessary. I am thinking I will order in November/ December and it will arrive in Febuary. Still have not made a firm decision on the clear or satin finish or the cut lengths. It is not cost prohibitive so I will be ordering this for my needs alone if necessary and will end up with enough to do 3 or 4 other boats when it comes in. The original clear anodizing costs almost an extra dollar/ foot verses the satin ???
