I can sew but I'm needing the framework for an aft deck enclosure. Up in Port Clinton they make these for Marinettes all the time. Here in the Keys we are an oddity and things are expensive. Any other older 28 owners with ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

I already have 2 covers I made myself. One is a "Sun cover" that wont do squat for rain (pictured). The other is a rain cover that keeps out the elements but is not nice for sitting on the rear deck. I'm looking for a bowed cover (need bow frames) simular to a convertable top that will accomidate side panels that keep out the rain. [img][/img][img][/img]

Mike,

I bought some surplus stainless bows from Flounder Pounder in Port Canaveral, and re-sewed the canvas that came with it to use until I can have new canvas made. The bows are the finest polished ss and must have been intended for a gold-plater. This picture shows the canvas before the snaps and straps were tightened up. Note the solar cell mounted atop at the stern.

I paid $100 for the whole shebang, aided by the fact that I had cash, and it was just before Christmas.

That setup look exactly like ours. The wife made up an enclosed screen room that snaps to the sunbrella, which makes for delightful sitting out while on the hook. Spent many a pleasant evening there, watching the sun go down.

Jeff, the green canvas that came with the bows (as shown) has zippers all around apparently for screens or canvas sides, but the task of identifying the zippers and making matching sides is beyond me. My admiral doesn't do domestic but maybe I can find a boat canvas guy who can handle it. Perhaps you could explain how the bottom of the screens is attached -- snapped to the coaming around the cockpit?

Zippers all around at the top is MUCH better than the homemade snas we use. We also use snaps at the bottom, but there is a far better way--saw it on a new boat (forget brand):

The bottom of the canvas has a bungee cord running all around the periphery with slots to expose the cord every foot or so. The boat had small posts screwed to the wall at each slot in the canvas. You simply pulled down on the bungee and looped it over the posts to hold it in place. Brilliant! The spring action also pulls the canvas tight against the wall to keep those little flying buggers out.

What a good idea! I use bungee for the curtains because it stays straight and doesn't offer the eye-pokage of dowels (my little tracks are long gone) but this use had not occurred to me. I have never liked the boat snaps, sometimes they are a bear to get on and off. Thanks.
