I have a flagship marine 16.5 ac unit that the PO installed in the cat. The compressor kept cycling off and on - maybe run 30=45 sec and shut down. AC tech came out. said freon/pressure ok and his thought was,not enough water being pumped thru(condenser coils burn your hand). PO had removed original water pump(March[mfg} and installed Jabsco 180gph. Called Flagship. They said "needs at least 500gph so I ordered 510gph March from them. Installed today, same symptom. The new pump shoots a 1" stream about 4' before it starts dropping. Almost hits the port hull from the starboard hull! Condenser coils still too hot to hold hand on Gonna go under tomorrow and catch/time a bucket to verify output. Compressor makes cycling sound(like head pressure building up) and then shuts down until the water cools things back down(about 20-30 secs). Went under hull and the pump slaps my hand up to the thru hull with a lot of suction. All advise considered and appreciated before I call the tech back out....

i'm cool - as a neighbor sold me a roll around for $45. less than the pump cost me!Brick wall

I have a 16,500 BTU Flag ship I installed in my 32 sedan. It works fine. The compressor coils are warm when running but not hot. I think the manual says somthing about that i think. The circulation pump is a March but I do not know the size. (Order it with the A/C unit as a kit). The flow of water coming out of the A/C uint seems strong. It is no fire hose but it has some pressure it is not dribbling down the side of the boat.

Is the flow direction correct? The cooling water going in and out at the proper ends of the coil?

Call www.flagshipmarine.com tech support may be able to help.

From Flagships web page......

Under normal operating conditions, the condenser (the copper tube within a tube on the unit) should be warm to the touch - if you cannot feel any heat in the condenser whatsoever when the compressor is running, you have too much cold water passing through it. This is only a problem in some areas where the water temperature is 40°F and the air temperature is 90°F! This can be remedied by installing a gate valve on the supply line at the unit to throttle down the water flow. Remember to never restrict the SUCTION side of a centrifugal pump, conversely there is no harm restricting the DISCHARGE side of a centrifugal pump.

If the condenser is too hot to hold your hand on constantly, you are not getting enough cooling water. This is not a very scientific way of determining water flow but it works. Most of our units have manually resettable high pressure switches on the condenser, whereby if the unit is operated without enough cooling water and the refrigerant pressure on the high side reaches the limit, the switch will activate, shutting down the compressor until it is manually reset by pushing in the button.

I can scan my manual if I remember to pick it up next time I am at the Boat..

I have a new flagship marine too and all my vitales are exactly like RR's but I know I have the big march pump with about 1050 gallons per. hour but I just let the single unit slow it down and all is fine and my stream gets out there about 3 feet before hitting the river. Flow direction is a reasonable question. It seems backwards but mine flows in at the top and out at the bottom and was taged as such.

Sitting here with a buddy and we think you have low air flow , can you disconnect the output duct and let it run ??? restrictive air flow can cause one of the safeties to kick it off too . !!!!

Thanks, Doug. I'll consider air flow also. There seems to be plenty coming out the vents. There is a return air vent cut into the cabin wall, with a filter but the symptom stays the same with the hatch cover in the floor, right at the unit, open. I was told today that our surface temp here is almost 90*. Bet that has a lot to do with it as air temp is upper 90's also....emailed Fastlane today also.
