Has anyone installed a power vent into the head of a 32'. I've spent enough time to determine that it's stuffy and not very well vented (tho there's a static vent in the overhead).
I'd thought of installing a larger 12v PC fan controlled by a switch which would be powered from the cabin light in the head.

Questions:
1. Has anyone ever cut into the bulkhead bordering the anteroom section of the head which borders the walkway up to the fwd berth? I was going to mount the fan in that area if it's clear of vertical supports (and it puts it outside of the shower area itself).
2. What's the challenge in routing a set of wires to the light fixture?
- I'd like to snake a set of wires down the bulkhead to install a rubber covered switch to allow for control of the fan. This'd force air from
from the main living area (air conditioned / dryer air) into the head area.

Comments? Suggestions?

I have been thinking adding a head cabin vent. I wanted to vent it to the outside. I did not want to go thru the roof. I was thinking of adding one thru the window. I can remove my glass without a lot of trouble, once removed I was going to take the glass to a local glass shop. I am still thinking about how to hide the wires.

Bill,

Do U mean something like this I ran the power from the over head light made up a tunneled U shaped channel out of teak to conceal the wires from light to fan so when the light is turn on the fan comes on . I leave the angled siding window open about a ½” or so works fine. Some of my dock neighbors will heartily attest to that Phew

If your thinking of having them cut a hole so that fan will fit I don’t think they can cut tempered glass. Might have to go to Lexon ? Plus U’ll have to make that pane stationary. A suggestion on the wiring U could over the ceiling to the window area mount the fan as close as possible to upper molding than to the fan? Think

Norm,

That's close to what I want to do, but I was going to mount it in the wall between the head area and the walkway up to the front berth (the edge of that wall is just visible on the left side of your pic. The head door is mounted to that wall. That way I could pull in dryer/cooler air into the overall head area. I figured I could dress up the fan with some plastic covers (that wouldn't cut down or impede air flow) or go whole hog and make a teak louvered cover for both sides.

Using the existing vent in the ceiling for the outflow may be the wrong approach (at least while showering) as the amount of humidity being expelled into the overhead area would be a huge invite to mildew and mold. Leaving the angled window cracked a bit would the warm, humid air to be expelled without losing too much cooled air.

I like the idea of a teak channel covering the wires. Would greatly reduce the amount of fishing a wire thru the overhead and down the wall.

Bill,

There’s two thing U have that I don’t one A/C & the other is a overhead vent. U are right about the chance of causing a mold problem venting the humid air into the overhead. Another thing I’ve never use the shower on board we use the marina’s facilities. Not really sure how much of the A/C air would go out the opened window but how much hot steamy air is coming into the cabin when U open the head door that the A/C has to handle. After using the shower U can always shut the window. The channels easy to make I used a 1/2" x 3/4'” pc of teak with a 3/8" router bit run thru the center to lengths I needed. BTW my primary reason for the fan is to expell the PHEW!! Whistle

I had thought of installing a vent fan too but I then ran an AC/heat duct to the head. Best upgrade to the head ever. With the ac or heat on or just the circulation fan I can crack the shower window, keep the door shut and any odor is forced out the window. Since the forced air provides positive air pressure in that little space it take no time at all to change over the air.
I ran y duct behind the refer, through the wall, under the head sink and out on the upper right corner of the sink cabinet. Its a 2.5" diameter opening with 4" bezel. Its the type you can rotate and adjust air flow.

We bought a small, 12 volt fan from West Marine and mounted it at the top of the side window. It does a great job of blowing moisture and stink out of the head. One of the best things I did to the boat.

A better solution would be to cut a hole in the roof of the head and install one of those RV hooded vents. I'm not that brave, however!
