This is a concept discussion only at this point. In the nex few seasons, we are planning on taking some extended trips, but are limited by time. For example, I would love to spend a month or so on the Chesapeake, doing the Tenn-Tom, or North Channel. The time (and fuel) required to getting these places makes the trip problematic.

How practical is it to transport the boat to the cruising destination? What is a reasonable cost per mile for reliable transport (32 fisherman)? How much transport do you have to do before it becomes cost efficient to buy a trailer? It would seem that you could transport the boat to the cruising destination for less than the fuel costs to get there.

I know half the fun is the journey, but sometimes work and other commitments can get in the way. By the way, the boat is located on Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie.

Thanks for your thoughts! Summer is just too short! Scott

Sounds like fun. On the Tenn-Tom there used to be a strech of over 100 miles between fuel stops. may be a problem. wayne

Hi

You might want to get a few quotes on the shipment to see what is the average cost for moving a boat of that size. If your flexible on the timing you can cut your cost significantly by having the transporter arrange your shipment in conjunction with another back haul. The folks at Lockview Marina and Transport have a good reputation with all of the marina owners I have talked to. Here is their website.

http://www.lockviewmarina.com/

They are happy to give quotes and work with you on back hauls.

If you are a bit more adventurous, you can also try U-Ship.com.

http://www.uship.com/boats/

They are an open bid market for transporting stuff. Kinda like e-bay in reverse. I used it to move my boat recently and got a much lower price then the major transporters were asking. $650 vs. $1800. However, I wouldn't recommend using the fellow we ended up with. While the boat got there in one piece, the guys lack of professionalism was really scary. Like E-Bay, it is buyer beware. Check the feedback as best as you can.

U-Ship has a pricing estimator that I found to be very helpful to understanding what the price range for such a move should be.

http://www.uship.com/price_estimator.aspx

Good luck with your trip!

Oh, and don't forget to add in the associated marina costs for hauling out and launching the boat!

Thanks to all for the replies. This is all in the planning stages right now. I will take a rain-check Brent when we get a bit closer to contact you. Seeing as we have the same boats, we could benefit from each others experiences. One more thought, What is a ballpark figure a suitable trailer for a 32 cost (new or used)?

Thanks, Scott

By the way, Brent what marina are you at. We are at Sonrise on Sandusky Bay.

Don't mean to "highjack" the thread but just saw Dependo's post about gasoline on the TennTom. You're correct Wayne, but I've always been able to make it from Bobby's Fish Camp to Dog River (on the Western shore of Mobile Bay). Can't remember exactly but it's about 120+/- miles. This stretch is actually below the TennTom on the Tombigbee but folks call it the TennTom. The difficult stretch, when traveling down river from the Tennessee to New Orleans is from the mouth of the Tennessee on the Ohio to Memphis; but I was able to get gas distributor to bring a tank truck to the river with a long hose at New Madrid, MO, carried over 100 gallons (I don't recommend) and let the big river increase mileage. If anyone is interested in making the longer trips, it is posssible but not always advisable. I'll check old notes if anyone might need assistance in planning.
