I need to get some insurance for a 28 ft BigM . I am already getting a quote from BoatUS. Can anybody recommend any other insurance companies that I should be seeking quotes from?

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, Allstate isn't an option. Which is to bad because I already use them for all of my other insurance needs. They will only insure boats up to 30 years old and mine is a 1970. Thats why I am shopping around for a new company.

Has anybody had to deal with putting in a claim with BoatUS? I would be interested to hear how smoothly the transaction went.

Boat US: big claim on engine failures, they paid with little fuss. Claims rep told me it was a close call but in my favor because I had not nickle & dimed them on petty claims (which was because I don't do that and never had any petty claims). In another case, one of their insureds hit me and caused really minor damage. Boat US followed up several times until I told them it was such a small amt, I would forget about it.

I know most of you know this.....My State Farm policy covers up to $500 for emergency service which includes towing, stuck towing, delivery of gas, oil, loaned battery, jump, change of tire on trailer. Policy says the policy deductible does not apply to this Emergency service coverage.

Wonder if my insurance premium would go up if I make an emergency service claim?

Question, why would I get Boatusa tow membership? Think I boat on a lake with tow area of about 10 miles.

I got a good deal from Fremont Insurance (www.fmic.com) and all I needed was pictures of my boat on the water, no survey. Only $278 for my 28'. State Farm, my auto insurer, was twice that. There is a big advantage to having all my insurance with State Farm (home, car, and boat). I can add an inexpensive 1 million dollar overall liability rider. Right now I got 3 cars and 3 boats and I need a big price break.

Any one but Progressive. I have had several customers burned by them after their boat sank. They worked a lot harder to find a way not to pay than to provide customer service. If you don't want to cover the policy then don't take their premium for all of those years.

When you are shopping make shure you get an agreed hull value policy. Make sure that number is enought to replace your boat and it's contents. Get environmental pollution coverage. Spill containment is typically more expensive than raising the boat. Also make sure that there is money set aside to recover the boat if it sinks, is ran hard aground, burns, etc. Make sure any money to recover the wreck doesn't come out of that agreed value you get in the event of a loss.

Cheap premiums and cool commercials don't make for a good insurance company.

yooper,
That is a good deal!! Sounds too good to be true Think I will be revisiting my policy soon. I currently have my boat insured for its value for replacement. Need to make sure I am covered for Spill containment, etc..like Capt Chad mentioned.

Thanks for the info guys. Still wondering if anyone has ever used the emergency service part of their insurance. Sounds like a great feature..if it doesn't make the premiums go up. Eh?

Insurance....the best scam going.

- #1 a quick call to the insurance company will answer that
- #2 what is tow cost on your lake? are you willing to pay that? are there even tow services available?

Tundra, what lake are you on?

Keep in mind guys, when you say a 10 mi tow area what does that mean? 10 mi across entire lake? Tow boats charge from the time the boat leaves the dock until it returns to it's home dock. I have people get mad all the time when they can see where they were trying to go but my closest tow boat is 20 miles away. Sorry, but I can't feasibly have a boat everywhere all the time.

As far as using your insurance for "Emergency Services", how many Tow Boats does your Insurance Company operate? Seriously, my members come first. Everyone thinks that we will run on "cash" calls first because we make no money towing our members. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our members are what keep us in business. They ARE our priority. We may or may not have time to service someone other than a Sea Tow member. Not to mention, if it is a real "Emergency Service" and you have knocked a shaft, rudder, etc out of the boat and you have flooding that is beyond your ability to keep up with who do you want to call? Do you call your insurance company hotline so you can go through the phone tree (remember you have to press 1 for english, or 2 depending on your state) or the local professionals that can immediately get a boat underway to come keep your crew from getting wet?

Capt Chad,
The insurance company would reimburse for the tow expense. Detailed receipts for the emergency service (tow, gas, jump, etc) turned in to your insurance company should work....Don't know. It says it in my policy so they should stand behind it.

My State Farm agent confirmed that towing ,gas, jumps, etc are included and are not subject to the deductible. They will reimburse me for up to $500 with faxed or mailed receipts. Applause

That's enough to cover me on our lake.

That's not enough to cover you guys on the ocean. d'oh!

Why not just use BoatUS for towing? I think it's 125.00 a year for "unlimited" towing.. Seems like a no brainer.

I asked my agent if an emergency tow would be considered a claim, and would it make my insurance premium go up. Here is the response....

Quote:
This would be considered a claim. State Farm will not surcharge you for using emergency road service.

An insurance surcharge is an additional charge on an insurance policy which is usually based on rating factors. Ratings are used to assess the degree of risk associated with a particular policy, and in many regions, insurance companies are allowed to levy surcharges on people with increased risks.
