HOW TO INSTALL A BOW EYE
A "how to" story with tips and tricks for a 1975 28' Express.

I wanted to be able to reach it so I laid down on the deck, and reaching as far down as possible, marked the spot. Then a measurement from the deck plate was transferred into the anchor rode locker to make sure the location would work.

Drilled two 1/16 holes at the correct spacing and gradually increased drill bit size up to the 1/2. The sharp V of the bow had to be hand filed to get the nuts to seat right.

The hardest part was cutting the bevel on the bar stock with a Sawzall. 4200 sealer was applied to the outer nut seat and U bolt threads. Stainless washers and lock nuts secured the deal.

Got the SS U bolt (5/16" X 3 1/8") from West Marine and the aluminum bar (2"W X 5"L X 3/4"H) from the scrap yard.

I cut a 1 1/2 inch Aluminum bar for my bow eye. I chamfered edges on a table saw. A Carbide bit will cut aluminum, go slow and dress in long sleves and face schield. The cut bits hurt when they hit skin.
The blade will not be good for any thing else now so use a cheap carbide blade. I have cut plenty of aluminum with carbide blades.
We cut some aluminum 4 inches thick with a large Skil saw at work.

DiverDennis I installed this on the sportsman this winter. Your advice came in very handy. It takes some guts to start drilling holes is the bottom of your boat! Everything came out great and works perfect. Thanks again, Mike

Nice job how long did it take you I need to do this last year I pulled my bit clean off getting it on the trl

Thanks. I think the job only took about 30 minutes. I spent more time climbing in and out of the boat measuring than I did drilling. Once I got up the nerve, I started gradually increasing drill sizes until I got to 3/8". I then used a counter bore bit
(3/8'id-5/8'od) to make the pockets for the flanges on the bow eye. With the pockets complete I finished drilling to 1/2" applied sealant and installed with a v-block on the inside of the hull for support. I'll attach a pic of the counter bore bit if you use an eye with the round flange it works great, if the eye is threaded all the way up the way Dennis did it by filing a flat spot for the hex nut is probably a better way to go. I will be doing this on my 1959. Thanks for the info !! I was worried about my cleate when I trailered the boat the other day.
