I have placed an ad and contacted Tom Smith of the local paper expressing our sorrow. I do not know the type. A recent member 190Lakeside is from the area.

Here is some more info on the 65' Marinette that sank.

Leave it to the media to screw up the details.

Such a sad, sad event. I have been trying to find additional information, but there doesn't seem to be much available. For the boat to sink in such deep water he surely had to have lost power while in the main channel.

The barge traffic on the Tennessee River can be challenging for recreational boaters. Learned this lesson once a number of years ago while fishing with a friend south of Chattanooga on Nickajack Lake. We were fishing in 30 feet of water just outside the edge of the main channel in a tight bend of the river. A tow with 12 barges was coming downstream and we didn't give it a lot of thought until he got closer and closer and we realized he wasn't turning where we thought he would. The panic started to set in. The trolling motor battery was dead and my friend could not get the engine started. Grabbed the one paddle we had and started paddling like crazy. When the tow finally started his turn, he hit the port corner of our transom and almost sank us. Scary stuff. I have made darn sure I stay away from these monsters ever since.

TVA rules for dealing with barge traffic......

I being from Tenn. area learned years ago to fear and respect the tows. I sometime will take the inside of a turn on a tight river and call them on the radio to let them know. If I HAVE to anchor I choose the inside corner, leave them room to swing the stern. The M must have gotten rolled over, even a M coudlnt survive that. Alum is 5 times stronger than fiberglass and 5 times lighter and will stretch I believe 15 to 25 % more before shearing. Have raised many boats for insurance Companies (including a 75 ftr) and seen Metal boats in the Island run up on reefs, roll around for a couple of days, then get drug off at the next high tide! Next to them will be fiberglass that shattered when it it same reef! We have all seen the tug roll over video at the bridge, rite itself and keep on going, THESE THINGS ARE MONSTERS!! What a sad loss for the family. Sorrydog

Thanks for the ad. How is this sort of thing paid for by the forum? Can I make a donation?

I just found an update on the accident. My word, four people were aboard.

It's hard to collect 50 cents a person. Please consider donating to the Boat US foundation, US Power Squadrons or adding a condolence ad yourself. The times daily has a forum to post to also. Condolences there wouldn't hurt.

Thank you SorryDog. I hope this loss will make us all more carefull. Those barges are so dark & I've seen them on the river with non working or badly working running lights . I try not to get caught out past dark unless I'm anchored in a cove. Wayne

Also keep in mind things can be towed behind a tug. I've heard of boats getting sliced open on a tow cable from a tug to a barge.

I always make it a habit to never cross directly behind any type of tug/work boat.

Gotta try to be as prudent as possible out there.

I'd also encourage everyone to check their nav lights this spring too. For the last couple years I have been using them during the daytime too. Kind of like daytime running lights on your car.

People don't realize that the tow captain can't see the water clooser than 200 to 300 feet in front of tow, and more important he can't stop or turn quickly.

One of our, (Material Service's) tows spit out a jet ski & operator that stalled in front of the tow. The jet ski was circling the tow jumping wake, went in front of tow and did not come out the other side. The quick thinking captian reversed engines, and blew the operator out one side, alive, & jet ski out the other. Fortunatly he was going up stream, the outcome would not have been good had he been going down stream!

Give those guys a wide berth!

I see the latest edition at www.timesdaily.com says the boat has been towed away for inspection.
I find it surprising they managed to raise the boat from such a depth so soon. And then tow it away. I wonder if it really did sink or if it was just submerged below the surface.

I'm curious to see the damage done to the boat and not in a morbid way but just to see how the hull held up to such force.

Must be a terrible time for the families involved. Hopefully everyone will be recovered for closure purposes.
