I see the latest edition at www.timesdaily.com says the boat has been towed away for inspection. I find it surprising they managed to raise the boat from such a depth so soon. And then tow it away. I wonder if it really did sink or if it was just submerged below the surface. I'm curious to see the damage done to the boat and not in a morbid way but just to see how the hull held up to such force. Must be a terrible time for the families involved. Hopefully everyone will be recovered for closure purposes. -Karl

For more than a few years now on the Great Lakes we have seen many Lakers converted to barges. The motivation is USCG manning requirements. When I sailed there was always a wheelsman and a pilot in the wheel house. Now just the pilot. If that pilot is answering a radio telephone call, getting the weather, or just has to visit the crapper all you have on lookout is Mr. Auto Pilot and he don't give a dam. Many years back a barge came in to dock and the workers asked what the heck was sticking out of their anchor hawspipe...it was the mast of some unfortunate sailor. Never heard if they ever found out who was missing and the TB operator had no idea where the collision took place.
Size always should be considered when deciding to give way in a channel.

Back in 1977 the boat next to ours sank in her slip. She was a beautiful 34 ft. wooden Chris Craft hanging from her mooring lines just below the surface. A haunting sight. Two weeks later she was back from the shop, afloat in her slip and looked good as new.

Our condolences notice didn't show up today. I am a bit annoyed.
Unzinced ships sink at slips.
