Look at the contrast in daylight before you buy. Both are good. Read through the whole garmin line.

Some of the later designs are far better. Don't pay too much for it. Try not to get the older 492C for less than $400 if you can.

The 420s - nice for the price Get something that links up to DSC (has NMEA 183 - rs 232 output). The 535 series might be a couple hundred more, but is 800 nits (more readable). Consider the networking aspect if you plan to buy anything else.

Here's what we did (thanks to advice from our members):

I have a basic Garmin B & W unit--200 bucks anywhere--connected, via a cable (20 bucks), to our laptop. Loaded in the laptop is the BlueChart software Garmin sells, complete with their (free) N-Route software to operate on the laptop. The result is a GIGANTIC, full color GPS you couldn't buy for under 5 grand. Visibility is excellent, and the standard Garmin Map76 unit has all the features (and more) than one needs.

Jeff,

I do the same thing. Bought a Garmin handheld mapping unit and mapping software a number of years ago (GPS III Plus). Mine came with the interface cable. The map on the unit itself is usable, but when I have it hooked up to my laptop, it is darn hard to beat. Aside from the boat, it is great on car vacations - plug things up, and let my wife be the navigator if we head into 'uncharted territory'. After 8 years, it is probably time for me to spring for updated maps but so far I can't talk myself into it.

I have a portable Garmin aviation GPS 296. Do you think this
can be used to interface with a laptop? How about maping software
for the laptop. I thought this could be done but wasn't sure until
you guys brought the subject up.

I have a Garmin MAP76, external antenna, rs232/NEMA cable, laptop PC I was going to put in my rebuilt BigM but #$%&*! Garmin "upgraded" their MapSource software and removed the chart plotter option on me without my knowledge. I still have the old software CD but now all my files have been upgraded as well and I can not read them with the old software. So I put the new software back on my PC and am seeing what format I can save the couple of hundred waypoints I have so that the old MapSource can read them.

Norbie:

Better e-mail Garmin before commitment. Looks like they decided to stop people like me using a laptop (and not paying thousands for new GPSs).

Interesting! Maybe I need to hold on to my old stuff. The mapping software I bought years ago was Garmin's Mapsource US Roads and Recreation. Doesn't have the detail of the Bluechart stuff, but because I use it for multiple travels, it does a good job for me. My old version always seems to be updatable. Think I'll hang on to it until I'm forced to upgrade. So far, everything still works between the laptop and my handheld. Fingers are crossed. I do like Garmin. Bought their stock years ago and until recently has been a good performer. Have to say that I am glad I sold a bunch of it last year when they were colse to a peak.

I believe you should be able to add BlueCharts to your MapSource without problems. I even tried "borrowing" some unlocking codes to see if I could unlock other Great Lake charts and it worked. I doubt if I would be able to upload those charts to my GPS but that didn't really bother me as long as I had cart plotter capability and could see where I was on my laptop.
