found this DIY tip in my Boat US email today:

"...Rust-proof Shaft: If your engine shaft stuffing box doesn't have a spray shield to keep the nuisance seawater mist from rusting adjacent parts, add one by shaping a piece of plastic from a laundry soap bottle and attach it to the box with hose clamps or wire ties..."

So...why couldn't we use the same stuff under rail feet or as isolation material for transducers, et al. Out of the sun, the plastic won't decay. It costs nothing (attn: FJP). It is everywhere. Those Tide (and other containers) are thick enough and if you want more thickness, double 'em up.
