I used this forum last year to get my Carpac reading right on the money. Blasted bottom, 7 coats of paint and new anodes make for a seaworthy boat! So now that I know she will stay floating, my 1985 32' Sedan with twin 275hp needs an electronics upgrade.
It is all original, tall radio antennas, old radios, old syncronizer, old barely working depth sounder and old non-working speed indicator. Before I paint above the gunwales, should I remove the old mounts for the antennas and have them welded? Should I have all the mounting holes on my bridge welded up, too? Should I a replace my 23 year old radios? Should I get a chart plotter and new transducer? What about adding these new fuel flow sensors to monitor fuel efficiency? I like the syncronizer, what do I do there? Digital Tachs?
Bring on the ideas, I am ready for some work over the winter!
Thanks for all your input!!

I have been researching chartplotters and fuel flow gauges and the least expensive is the Northstar (formerly known as Navman). For a basic color GPS chartplotter (Explorer 550) and twin engine fuel flow senders expect to spend $550 - $600 through the on-line discounters. If you want to add depth/fish finder functions, (Explorer 657, 650 and 660) the price will be about $750. All come with 16 meg or 32 meg world maps, but if you want a much more detailed map a C-Map cartridge will set you back $50 to $150 depending on the area.

I have been quite happy with the Navman (now Northstar) chartplotter. But totally unhappy with the fuel transducers. In two years, many conversations with their tech support, three (free) replacements and uninstall/reinstalls..the fuel measuring system has never worked! It should and others on the board have had good luck with them. Not me.

Instead of welding the zillion of 1/8" holes I used JB Weld. It has held and blends in to the aluminum quite well. I have been reading the manual on my new Standard Horizon VHF and what you can do with the DSC when connected to a GPS. It's scary...if there is a special "Government access code" that the radio manufacturers might have been forced to include and that we don't know about. Ya I watched to many X-Files. But some of the features are really cool and convenient as well as having a hailer and doing the various fog horn sounds. www.ConsumerMarineElectronics.com
