I have a 28 Ft Marinette with a single 318 Chrysler Engine 1978 model. it is an express cruiser and has a steering transfer mounted back at the rudder. mine broke sometine ago and i have rigged up one that works. You have to shift the steering stations from a lever under the main console. Does anyone know what the original mechanism looks like back at the rudder? As I said , mine works but is not what was back there. When it broke i never could find all of the pieces.
Thanks
Volney Ferguson

Here's part of it. Two cables come to it; the steering cable and the shifting cable. Jeff

The shifting cable's still there, but I'm not about to attempt to remove it! That would be a nightmare of a job. Sorry. And you are correct: there are THREE cables.

One cable is missing. Hummm... I'll bet it's for the lower station!
Jeff
PS: Great photo. Can I steal it for my website?

Jeff, ?? No cables are missing and it is functional. As a matter of fact, I used it yesterday. One cable for upper station steering arm, one cable for lower station steering arm, and one cable to switch between the two. You are more than welcome to use the picture. Maybe I should take a new one. This one was taken shortly after I bought the boat. Bilge is a bit cleaner, and cotter pins / spacers have been replaced. John B.

thanks Tim sounds like mine and yours are the same. I do not know where you can find a cable unless Althouse has one. You might try West Marine. I have never looked at my cable so I don't know exactly what it looks like. It may be a standard shift cable, you might just need to verify the length. I would like to see the picture when you can get it.

OOoooohh yah! I see the third cable hiding under the other one, the sneaky thing.
I'll steal the photo for my web site. Thanks.

Volney, the pick from goldpoint should be a match for yours .mine looks the same except .looking at his pic my steering cables would come from the bottom and the shifting cable would be coming from the left.also i have one more arm that goes to the other rudder."32' twin drive" .i'll put the pic on in a few weeks im building a motor now.
tim
p.s. you should see if you can talk jeff out of the parts in his pic it would be most of what you need if the square hole is the right size.

Here is a follow-up picture that might help with the cable question. Looking back at the first one, I now see why Jeff posed the question. What was obvious to me, was not plain in the photo. John B.

A question for all,
I have to replace my upper cable assy (it is frozen).
I could change to an hydraulic system approx $2000 or replace the upper cable assy $250.
I have never used mine (I gave up on trying to get it done this season)
Is it a pain to switch between the upper and lower stations?
Robert

..."Is it a pain to switch between the upper and lower stations?"
Meaning, are the cables interchangable? (No. Too short.) Does the shifter screw up? (SOmetimes. Mine was frozen and never worked.)

Gotta add my two cents here. No pain at all to switch from lower to upper or back again. Just flip the changer lever and listen for the click, then climb up top (or go down below) depending on what you want to do. John B.

You have to pull out to change from upper to lower, or at least mine is that way.

All of you guys are probably going to want to kill me when I tell you this .When I bought my 32ft with flybridge I had never seen or heard of a Marinette here in Florida. I took the flybridge , upper controls , cables and everything off the upper deck and guess what ? Threw it in the dumpster . I thought I had purchased an oddball boat and no one would ever need that stuff. I found this forum and realized alot of these boats exist up north. I now see they could have been used, SORRY

Personally, I think you did the right thing! But you'd better duck when the others read your post.
