I am finally get back on the project. i got a line on a couple of Mercruiser's 8.4 liters with only a 100 hrs on them, I can buy these for less than 1 Chrysler 330. My question's are. Has anybody done this swap before? what is involved wireing ? do they make transmission adaptors or do i need to replace the transmissions? Short of making a sunroof in the salon, what the best way to get them out of a 37 dbl cabin? Thanks guy's look forward to hearing form you, Tim

My 37 dbl has a removable hole in flybridge floor to remove engines. It should be visible from inside as a trimed out rectangle about about 36" X 48".
Hope that helps.

The trouble with getting old, There is a lot of info in memory, I either can't find it or don't trust it if I do!

Thanks Roger, checked that out no such luck. if i completely disassemble the motor and I mean everything down ot the block and turn it sideways it will go out the door to the aft deck. Was hoping to avoid that. Other alternative is the side window. either way i guess i"ll be there awhile. Tim

Get out the Sawzall, Capt T. Might be easier in the end.
The trans will require the proper adapters but, since you're going to Chevies, there's lots of them around.

Jeff funny u should say that. We are flipping a coin, heads cut hole in top. Tails cut hole in bottom let motor fall. Come on tails. Just kidding. we are checking to see who around here can seal it back up for us once we are done cutting the hole in the bridge. either way alot of work. Still have to remove that 200 lb stainless plate that the captain chairs mount to and then remove the interior headliner then begin cutting. hope to take alot of pix of this project for future help for others. Did I understand you right, we can find the trans adapter's or is it better to just switch the tranny's out. Tim

It's a Chevy, right? THat's the most common marine motor. Gotta be a zillion trans adapters for any trans available.
Jeff
PS: Could you build a frame in the roof and make it removable for, ah, future, ah, replacement?

Before you cut a hole in the bridge, ask the marine mechanics how they do it. I have watched engine changes in a 37. It was not that bad. Used an a-frame lift inside the boat to get the engine into the salon. Removed the intake, manifolds, and heads. The engine slid out the side window using glide boards and a come along on the dock. Had to reverse the procedure to put it back. This approach avoids cutting the hole, fabricating reclose and some painting. Fooling with a 20 year old headliner is also an iffy thing to do.

Paul thanks we looked into that idea. problem is floor in the salon won't support the weight, without some serious weight distribution planks and the 37 will more than likely be out of the water when we do this. Fortunatly the shop she'll be at has a 25' crane. thanks for the suggestion. as i said earlier we'll be taking lots of pix to help others in the future to overcome this. The way I see it people will either say WOW thats a good idea or they'll look in aw and say, they actually lived through that.lol . hey Jeff got any idea were i go to find those adapters for the trans, yes they are Chevy big blocks going in.

paul, i'm glad to see i'm not the only one swaping an engine in the water.trying to do one sat if weather is good and help shows up .but it's an express so there is room to get it out of the boat.i think 4 people should be able to handle it without the heads and manifolds.
tim , good idea going to chevys .it was cheaper for me to stay with chrysler.so thats what i did. but in the long run chevys would have been better and more powerful.good luck

If you are concerned about weight spread on the salon floor, you can remove the heads, water pumps, intake and exhaust manifolds while the engine is still in the hull. The bare block will only weigh about 500 pounds - the weight of two old guys. The key is to have an A frame lift assembly with metal wheel tracks to spread the weight during the lift.
Of course, a straight lift out the roof is easier, but you will need tpo cut some large holes in the roof to do this. If you plan on using only one hole in the roof, you will still need to bring the engine out of the hull, then move it directly under the ceiling lift hole.

After a half century of rebuilding engines, I would NOT under any circumstances consider installing a motor that has not been "bench tested". (In this case, firing it up on the floor would be the appropriate method, as shown below.) You need to check the things out thoroughly before going through all that work. Besides, the motor can be far more professionally assembled on an engine stand vs. in the hull. Jeff

Thanks guy's apreciate all the info. Jeff, that's why we are going through the bridge topside, i want those babies runnin and runnin good before we instll them. It is far easier to fix a problem or odd noise with them on a stand than have to pull them again and again. Thanks again everybody. I am always open to suggestions.
