started boat this morning, and coudn't shut her off. heard a faint whining noise. tried to turn prt engine off at switch and she kept running. thought maybe switch just went bad. turned key off and she still was running. killed battery switch and she stopped.

Next- with key off, ignition switch down (off), turned battery on and engine turned over. Every time I turned battery on, engine starts and starter seems to be running as well. Starter solenoid?? any ideas to trouble shoot??
-thanks in advance, GT

One place to look would be at the ignition switch wiring - it could be shorted. Take off the switch and inspect the wiring. Or, perhaps, you can see it from behind the panel.

Dan,

Long time since U been aboard. Whistle U know U are the second member in the last month that has had that problem what’s up with this ?Think Well back to the problem after he went thru what most members suggested to no avail I gave him a buddies PH# that’s pretty good at that sort of stuff
they came to the conclusion that the Ing. switch had a good deal of corrosion on it he suggest for that member to clean it up & give him a call back to see if that was the cause. Never heard if it was or not? Anxious The violet wire is the main Ign. wire if U have a F/B clean that one also they’re somehow intertwined see if that works can’t hurt. Whistle

Sounds like the starter solenoid might be fused. Disconnect the small wire on the right side of the solenoid and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then your wiring is screwed up and is energizing the solenoid when it shouldn't be. If it does NOT go away (engine still turns over) then replace the solenoid. (NAPA sells an equivalent--just match it up).

if switch was shorted, wouldn't removing fuse in panel right by ignition switch be same as turning switch off?? 87 32sb. I removed fuse and turned on battery switch- engine turns over as soon as battery is turned on. boat ran fine all week! haven't messed with anything electrical.
doc- been away awhile but still know where to look for answers!

For what it's worth..........................had an event where the starboard engine would not shut off from the inside helm, would start and run fine, but wouldn't shut off. Drove me crazy, the problem was the ignition switch on the fly bridge was on and overriding the helm

That would override the accessory position if the switch were left on, but overriding the start position would require a broken (shorted) switch or someone physically holding the switch up in the start position.

My guess would be the solenoid, though the ignition switches are just plastic toggles. Could be broken inside as I mentioned above.

Might try whacking the solenoid with something to free the inside if it is sticking.
