After following all the advice from you folks on here I managed to get the stb motor to crank but still will not start. I took a volt meter and checked the coil connections in off and then on . Off nada, on 12volts to both + and - as well as coil wire..? Did I cross a wire somewhere? I did check and repair all the connections in the circuit.. ??????????? Feeling spent on thought Anthony

Anthony, Said : Did I cross a wire somewhere? You have to tell us ? Now that U have it cranking are U getting fuel, are timing & dwell set properly, are the cap & rotor good, & as U stated did U cross the plug wires ? On & On. Wish I could help more but I guess it’s going to have to be trial & error technique? One thing comes to mind spray starting fluid in carb (blower running) crank eng. see if at least pops trying to start? In your prior thread U stated it wouldn’t shut down did U mean it ran like normal or was it dieseling ??? Norm, Big s Live On

it ran normal , would not cut off with switch. rotor, cap, coil all good, fuel in carb...12volts at coil 3 places is not correct is it?

IF you have a ballast resistor, you should not see 12 volts at the coil (except when cranking the motor). More like 9 volts.

12 volts at the center high voltage terminal is not correct, coil is shorted out.

Unless they have changed things in the last 70+ years - the coil is an autotransformer and the primary/secondary are all the same(connected together)and I believe what your meter is telling you is normal with the engine not running and the ignition turned on. Jeff, isn't the ballast resistor just a piece of wire(with no current drawn thru it) and his reading is correct, if the points are open?

The coil gets a constant voltage. The ground is where the circuot is opened/ closed.
The ballast resistor is a piece of high resistance wire.

Jeff - "just a piece of wire" was to say there would be no voltage drop across it....

no current flow = no volage drop accross the load. or no current you will have + 12 volts there. Complete the circuit, have current flow and have voltage drop accross the ballast resistor. I recommend draw the circuit out or go to NAPA and get their handout or look at a Motors or Chiltons manual.--Ed

W O W......Thanks Norm...after several hours of tracing wires , testing voltages, cleaning contacts...... The problem was a $40.00 electronic control unit already replaced..(kinda) The "Engine Synchronizer" was shorting out through the tachs and guages causing the control unit to short . As it shorts out it allows 12 volts to pass through all the other circuits that require only 9 volts or less. Disconnecting the synchros ,again replacing the control unit , and turning the key. Now the bad news........Took her out for a shake down and hit a submerged log bending a screw and of course having to pull her.. She is back in the water awaiting my return to pay the tab and love her some more.. A

You would not believe ...got to the boat after 430.00 for pull and prop repair.ready for the 100 plus mile trip down the Chesapeake to her new birth.Got to the boat at daylight 32degrees...brrrr stepped in the cockpit ,fired em up,up to the fly bridge, off in the cold.7 hours later backed in the new mooring ,tied her up and she quit both engines.Wife met us there and asked where the trash can was ?turned out we were robbed the night before of EVERY single electronic item on board.all the tools ,and 5 bottles of primo booze.Oh yea , the 4 Penn rods and reals as well. As for the engines , the filters ,and carbs were full of mud/silt the same color as the dirt on the deck from where we left from. I am so sick...

Damn, ifin U had any luck it would have to be bad. Looks like it’s time for the call to Insurance Co. Did the theft take place at the new marina ? If so when U get the settlement don’t put the new stuff aboard to quickly they’ll nail U again & get all the new stuff it a trick them scoundrels use if you have shore power get yourself a cheap radio put it on a talk show station just loud enough barely to be heard on the cockpit deck so as not to disturb your dock neighbors a timer & lamp also helps prevent this sort of thing while U are away. BTW I don’t think the Ins co. going to cover the booze Norm, Big s Live On

Leave the stereo on low and your lights out, you can also turn on a cheap tv down below in a closed room and let the light relect out a covered port hole or cracked room door. I have done this for years, it works. Have been at dock with break ins and have had them hit the boats on both sides of me and thought I was aboard dozing. Currentley have a 16 in. moniter in my window looking at the dock, with a camera looking at who ever walks by my boat,so they can see themselves walk up. Also have a small baby moniter so they can see themselves get onboard! It got cold here last week, had a guy try to get on one of the liveaboard boats next to me about 3 in the morning and he ran him off, passed on mine, had tv ect. Sorrydog

Jeez! You guys need to find a better marina. If anyone strange approaches mine, a dozen pair of eyes are on him immediately.

On the Bay's western shore for more than 20 years have not had - not even heard of - a single robbery incident. Although this area has its share of shady characters, they seem (so far) to be leaving marinas pretty well alone. By the way, was your boat locked?
