This 10% alcohol we have in our gasoline today sucks up the water in the air every day as the gasoline expands in the daytime and shrinks at night. At the end of a month or two, the alcohol evaporates and you are left with a slug of water in your tank. This along with the bugs in the water will cause a lot of rust and other problems. You have to add Stabil Blue Fuel stabilizer when you are not using the gasoline or storing the boat. If you have rust, get bigger fuel filters as you will have a lot of problems till the tank starts leaking. When it starts leaking, you may not have anymore problems.

Yall got me thinking. I know the time will come when it starts to leak. I'm sure it will be in the bottom of the tank. leak into the bildge then bilge pump pumps it overbord if it doesn't explode. What a bill that will be. I'm going to have to tear out all rear deck I guess to remove the tank. Has anyone done this. I have an express, wonder if I could just cut a hole in the deck (before it leaks) & put a hatch there to remove the tank. I can see me trying to cut a hole with a rip saw with fumes in the bildge. What a trip that would be!

Why cut a hole in the deck? I can't see it taking more than a (good full) day to pull the deck and the tank. I was eyeing mine up, and Im not sure if it is the same tank or not, but it looks like you could pull one engine, and bring it out through that opening, maybe even without pulling an engine. As far as pulling gas tanks go, I would say our boats (expresses at least) are on the top of the list of easy. My 23 Aft has the tank glassed in UNDER the aft cabin...

Wayne,

I’m thinking on a 32' if the tank was near empty U could snake it out the hatches to the engines compartment on a Express take some measurements see if it’ll fit between the engines & needless to say if it does plug the fill & vent openings well Oh there I went & said it. d'oh!

I looked at my express this past weekend & don't think my tank will come out unless I cut the deck or take the whole deck out first. no leaks so far on a 36 year old tank. add to my growing list. Wayne

Guess I got lucky, my 1966 has twin aluminum 35's. As I have an I/O the tanks are just aft of the weather deck bulkhead and the engine is at the transom. Still, I found lots of stuff in them, so much that I left a gallon of acetone soak for a while to break it loose. There had steel fill pipes, which were rusted through, which is likely the cause of the crud. Why did they did that? 1.5" alu conduit matched the 1 7/8" o.d. on the tank fill exactally, the fuel hose was expensive and had a minimum purchase of 15' but our marina was willing to move the extra into their inventory. The tanks are cylinders and could come out the hatch.

Tim:
A lot has changed since 1972.
According to the USCG, the termimals on your batteries should be covered to avoid a short circuit and fire.
Also they should not be above or below any part of the fuel system and must be fastened securely to the boat.

Here's the regulation: http://edocket.access.gp...julqtr/33cfr183.420.htm

Better yet, battery boxes from Wallmart ($7.00) would cover the terminals and catch any spilled acid.

Last season, one of my batteries self-destructed and the case cracked. The acid spill was contained by the box.
As added protection, I sprinkle a box of baking powder in each battery box to neutralize the acid if it spills. It seemed to work.

That baking powder idea is terrific - you should pass it along to Boat US!

Hey guys just a word of caution about using baking soda to clean battery post or their connections just as it will naturalize the acidic deposits IT’LL also do the same to the battery especially flooded ones with the removable fill caps. Make sure that the caps are on tightly so none of the baking soda or it residue gets near the filler holes. I’m sure that 99.9% of the members are aware of this fact BUT just a friendly reminder
